Frackville is a borough in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, United States, incorporated in 1876. Today, the intersection of Interstate 81 and Pennsylvania State Route 61 is located near the borough, which is approximately northwest of Philadelphia and southwest of Scranton. Frackville is named for Daniel Frack, an early Anglo-American settler. History Frackville was settled in 1861. It was incorporated more than a decade later in 1876, when the villages of Frackville and Mountain City merged to form the borough of Frackville. The name "Mountain City", however, is still a common nickname for the borough. A past diner and beer distributor were both named after it. Early in the twentieth century, anthracite coal mining was the chief industry of this area, Northeastern Pennsylvania's historic Coal Region. Pennsylvania Route 61 (PA 61) is an state highway in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. The route is signed on a north–south direction, running from U.S. Route 222 Business (US 222 Bus.) in Reading northwest to US 11/ US 15/ PA 147 in Shamokin Dam. PA 61 heads north from Reading through Berks County to Hamburg, where it meets Interstate 78 (I-78)/US 22. The route continues into the Coal Region in Schuylkill County and heads through Schuylkill Haven, Pottsville, Frackville (where it has an interchange with I-81), and Ashland. Schuylkill Mall
Schuylkill Mall was an shopping mall located in Frackville, Pennsylvania. Built in 1980 by Crown American, the mall originally featured Kmart, Hess's, and Sears as its anchor stores; later additions to the mall included Pomeroy's (which was later bought out by The Bon-Ton) and Phar-Mor. In its day, it was one of the largest shopping malls in the state of Pennsylvania. After losing numerous tenants throughout the 2000s and 2010s with the decline in regional economy and residents, the mall had become increasingly vacant. As of 2017, only Dunham's Sports remained as a major anchor tenant. It closed December 31, 2017, relocating to Pottsville's Fairlane Village Mall, where it reopened on December 7, 2018. The last tenant to close in the Schuylkill Mall was Pearl Stadium 8 Theatres, which closed January 15, 2018.
