Crown American
Crown American is a privately held American company that manages and develops commercial real estate. The corporate headquarters is in downtown Johnstown, Pennsylvania, in a building designed by architect Michael Graves. History The company was founded in 1950 as Crown Construction. Frank J. Pasquerilla, who joined less than a year later, became president in 1956 and sole owner in 1961. The company's name was changed to Crown American in 1972 and in 1979 it acquired the Hess's department store chain. In 1993, the company split into two entities. The shopping mall portion of the company became a publicly held real estate investment trust, Crown American Realty Trust, and Crown American Hotels controlled the company's hospitality businesses. At its peak, Crown American operated 30 shopping malls, the Hess's department store chain (with 73 locations), and 20 hotels and motels. Johnstown is a city in Cambria County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 18,411 as of the 2020 census. Located east of Pittsburgh, Johnstown is the principal city of the Johnstown, Pennsylvania, Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes Cambria County. Carlisle Plaza Mall
The Point at Carlisle Plaza (formerly Carlisle Plaza and Carlisle Plaza Mall) is a shopping mall located in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. It is anchored by Dunham's Sports and Lowe's. History Carlisle Plaza was built as an open-air shopping plaza in 1964, with backing from David Javitch, founder of Giant Food Stores, and his son, Lee, who would soon become president and CEO of Giant. Under the ownership of Crown American Realty Trust (then called Crown Construction Company), plans were announced in 1968 for an expansion of the plaza into an enclosed mall. The enlarged and enclosed mall opened in 1976. Crown American sold the mall to Michael Joseph Development Corporation under the name Carlisle Realty Partners for $5.8 million in November 2002. Viewmont Mall
Viewmont Mall is a shopping mall located in Scranton, Pennsylvania. It is anchored by JCPenney, Macy's, Dick's Sporting Goods / Field & Stream, and HomeGoods. History Viewmont Mall cost $10 million to construct and the original anchors included Grant's, JCPenney and Sears. Sears opened first at the mall in February 1968, with JCPenney later opening in October. Grant's closed at the Viewmont Mall in 1976 and was replaced by Hess's the same year. Hess's built a larger store starting in 1987. Sears received major changes in 1993 that roughly doubled the store's size. Hess's closed in late summer 1994, and was replaced by Kaufmann's in Fall 1995. Viewmont, along with Wyoming Valley Mall was sold by Crown American to PREIT in 2003. Nittany Mall is an enclosed regional shopping mall in State College, Pennsylvania. It is located at the intersections of Route 150 and Route 26, one mile off the I-99 corridor.
