Fourth Phase
Fourth Phase (''Quarta Fase'', QF) is a faction within the Democratic Party (PD), a political party in Italy. The name of the faction was chosen to identify the new stage of left-wing Catholics in Italian politics, the first three being within the Italian People's Party (1919–1926), the Christian Democracy (1943–1994) and the Italian People's Party respectively, and the fourth the current one, with the Democratic Party, a party in which Catholics are a minority. This phase, according to the faction's website, started with the foundation of Democracy is Freedom – The Daisy (DL), that put together Populars with people coming from different political traditions. The heirs of the left-wing of the late Christian Democracy and later the Italian People's Party (1994–2002), a Christian-democratic party of the Christian left, organized themselves within DL as The Populars. The Democratic Party ( it, Partito Democratico , PD) is a social-democratic political party in Italy. The party's secretary is Enrico Letta, who was elected by the national assembly in March 2021, after the resignation of the former leader Nicola Zingaretti, while its president is Valentina Cuppi. Pierluigi Castagnetti
Pierluigi Castagnetti (born 9 June 1945, in Reggio nell'Emilia) is an Italian politician. Biography Graduated in Political science, in the 1970s he was collaborator of Giuseppe Dossetti, then of Benigno Zaccagnini and Mino Martinazzoli. In 1980 he was elected region councillor in Emilia-Romagna and two years later he became regional secretary of Christian Democracy. Elected to the Chamber of Deputies for the first time in the 1987 Italian general election, Castagnetti was re-elected also in the general election of 1992, while in the 1994 European Parliament election he was elected MEP. In 1991, he was among the members of DC who voted against Italy's participation in the Gulf War. In the Italian People's Party's congress of 1997, Castagnetti was beaten by Franco Marini for the appointment as secretary of the party, but in 1999 he managed to become the party's leader by beating Dario Franceschini and Ortensio Zecchino. Pier Luigi Bersani (; born 29 September 1951) is an Italian politician and was Secretary of the Democratic Party (PD), Italy's leading centre-left party, from 2009 to 2013. Bersani was Minister of Industry, Commerce and Craftmanship from 1996 to 1999, President of Emilia-Romagna from 1993 to 1996, Minister of Transport from 1999 to 2001, and Minister of Economic Development from 2006 to 2008. 2009 Democratic Party (Italy) Leadership Election
The 2009 Democratic Party leadership election was held in July–November 2009, following the resignation of Walter Veltroni in February 2009, after 16 months as secretary of the Democratic Party (PD), a political party in Italy. Pier Luigi Bersani, a former minister in several centre-left governments hailing from the Italian Communist Party (then Democratic Party of the Left and Democrats of the Left), was elected secretary in an open primary on 25 October. Three million Democratic supporters turned out to vote and it was a real fight between three candidates, with Bersani winning with only 53% of the votes cast. Bersani was declared new secretary of the party during the first meeting of the party's new national assembly elected on 7 November 2009. The Social Christians ( it, Cristiano Sociali) are a Christian social-democratic faction within the Democratic Party, a political party in Italy. Before that, they were a party (1993–1998) and a faction of the Democrats of the Left (1998–2007). The CS are a member of the International League of Religious Socialists (ILRS). History The group was founded as a party by trade-union leader Pierre Carniti and economist Ermanno Gorrieri in 1993, in order to represent Christian leftists and socialists within the nascent Alliance of Progressives. The Olivists (''Ulivisti'') are a faction within the Democratic Party (PD), a political party in Italy. The group includes both Christian left politicians, social democrats and social liberals. They have been close supporters of Romano Prodi, hence the term ''Prodiani'', and want the party to be stuck in the tradition of The Olive Tree. Antonello da Messina, properly Antonello di Giovanni di Antonio, but also called Antonello degli Antoni and Anglicized as Anthony of Messina ( 1430February 1479), was an Italian painter from Messina, active during the Early Italian Renaissance. It is led by Enrico Letta and that is why its members are often called ''Lettiani''. Democrats Really (''Democratici Davvero'') is a faction within the Democratic Party (PD), a political party in Italy. The group, whose leader is Rosy Bindi, basically includes Christian left politicians and social democrats. They have been close supporters of Romano Prodi and wanted the party to stick to the tradition of The Olive Tree, along with the Olivists. In the 2007 primary election for choosing the party leader, most Olivists, supported Rosy Bindi, along with Agazio Loiero's Southern Democratic Party and some members of The Populars, a loose association of former members of the Italian People's Party of which also Bindi was a member. Enrico Letta (; born 20 August 1966) is an Italian politician who served as Prime Minister of Italy from April 2013 to February 2014, leading a grand coalition of centre-left and centre-right parties. Since March 2021, Letta has been secretary of the Democratic Party (PD).
