Fort Marcy (horse)
Fort Marcy (April 2, 1964 – August 14, 1991) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse. He was a bay gelding, by Amerigo out of Key Bridge, by Princequillo. His grandsire was the important Italian horse Nearco. In 1970 Fort Marcy earned three Champion titles. He was named Horse of the Year in a poll by the publishers of Daily Racing Form, receiving 21 of the 42 votes ahead of Personality (10 votes) and Ta Wee (9 votes). Personality won a rival poll conducted by the Thoroughbred Racing Association. Fort Marcy competed for six years until his retirement at the end of the 1971 racing season. He died in 1991 at Rokeby Farm in Upperville, Virginia. Nearco
Nearco (January 24, 1935 – June 27, 1957) was an Italian-bred Thoroughbred racehorse described by '' Thoroughbred Heritage'' as "one of the greatest racehorses of the Twentieth Century" and "one of the most important sires of the century." He was unbeaten, winning 14 races at distances from 1000m (5 furlongs) to 3000m (1 mile 7 furlongs), including the Derby Italiano and Grand Prix de Paris. He was then sold for a record amount to Martin H. Benson and stood stud in England, where he became the patriarch of several of the most dominant sire lines in Thoroughbred history. Breeding Nearco was bred in Italy by Federico Tesio, who also bred several other champions including the undefeated Ribot. His dam was the excellent racemare Nogara, who had won the Italian 1000 and 2000 guineas and was Italian champion filly at ages two and three. American Champion Older Male Horse
The title of American Champion Older Dirt Male Horse is an American Thoroughbred horse racing honor awarded annually to a stallion or gelding, four years old and up, for performances on dirt and main track racing surfaces. In 1971, it became part of the Eclipse Awards program as the award for Champion Older Male Horse. The award originated in 1936 when the ''Daily Racing Form'' (DRF) began naming an annual champion. In the same year, the Baltimore-based ''Turf and Sports Digest'' magazine instituted a similar award. Starting in 1950, the Thoroughbred Racing Associations (TRA) began naming its own champion. Ta Wee
Ta Wee (1966–1980) was an American Thoroughbred Hall of Fame race horse. Background Ta Wee was bred at the Tartan Stable of William L. McKnight (chairman of the board of Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Co.). (The W. L. McKnight Handicap is raced in his honor at Calder Race Course.) Foaled on March 26, 1966, she was sired by Intentionally, the American Champion Sprint Horse of 1959. Man o' War appears on both sides of Ta Wee's pedigree, but Ta Wee's dam was the great broodmare Aspidistra by Better Self by Bimelech by Black Toney. Aspidistra also goes back to the influential Ben Brush. A birthday gift in 1957 to McKnight by his employees, Aspidistra cost a reputed $6,500 and was entered in claiming races. Personality (1967–1990) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse who was voted 1970 Horse of the Year honors. Background Personality was bred by the partnership of Isidor Bieber and owner/trainer Hirsch Jacobs. Sired by Hail To Reason, the 1960 American Champion Two-Year-Old Colt, Personality was out of U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee Affectionately, a daughter of another Hall of Fame inductee, Swaps. Personality was raced in the salmon pink-and-green silks of Hirsch Jacobs' wife, Ethel. However, the Hall of Fame trainer died on February 23, 1970, and did not see his three-year-old colt's success that year. Son John W. Fort Marcy Handicap
The Fort Marcy Stakes is a Grade II American Thoroughbred horse race for three-years-old and older run over a distance of miles on the turf annually in early May at Belmont Park, in Elmont, New York. The event currently offers a purse of $200,000 added. History It was initially known as the Fort Marcy Handicap but was renamed to the Fort Marcy Stakes beginning with its 2009 running. The race is named for the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame horse, Fort Marcy. Inaugurated on 31 August 1975, the event was run at Belmont Park a distance of seven furlongs. It was run in two divisions that year as well as in 1978, 1981, and 1987. The event was not held in 1976 and 1977. In 1980, the Fort Marcy Handicap was restricted to horses, age four and older.
