Forbidden Broadway Strikes Back
''Forbidden Broadway Strikes Back'' is a version of ''Forbidden Broadway'' created by Gerard Alessandrini. It previewed September 5, 1996 and opened at the Triad Theater October 16, 1996. The show won Alessandrini the 1997 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Lyrics and was nominated for the 1997 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Revue. It later moved to the basement of Ellen's Stardust Diner and, as is the show's tradition, spoofed Broadway theatre, Broadway's latest. An album was later released to accompany it, being the fourth volume of the FB franchise. The album was recorded and mixed by Cynthia Daniels at Giant Sound, Dec. 11-14, 1996, and released in 1997 after Original cast member David Hibbard (stage actor), David Hibbard moved on to Once Upon A Mattress and was replaced by Tom Plotkin. Gerard Alessandrini
Gerard Alessandrini (born November 27, 1953) is an American playwright, parodist, actor and theatre director best known for creating the award-winning off-Broadway musical theatre parody revue ''Forbidden Broadway''. He is the recipient of Tony Honors for Excellence in Theatre, an Obie Award, four Drama Desk Awards (including the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Lyrics and the Drama Desk Special Award), an Outer Critics Circle Award, and two Lucille Lortel Awards, as well as the Drama League Award for Lifetime Achievement in Musical Theatre. Life and career Alessandrini was born in Boston, Massachusetts, grew up in suburban Needham, and graduated from Xaverian Brothers High School in 1972. ''Cats'' is a sung-through musical composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, based upon the 1939 poetry collection ''Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats'' by T. S. Eliot. "You're Just in Love" is a popular song by Irving Berlin. It was published in 1950 and was first performed by Ethel Merman and Russell Nype in ''Call Me Madam'', a musical comedy that made its debut at the Imperial Theatre in New York City on October 12 that year. The show ran for 644 performances. Ethel Merman also later starred in the 1953 film version. Theatre lore has it that Berlin wrote the song one night after ''Call Me Madam'' was not doing well in tryouts. The second act of the show was lacking. "What I'd like to do is a song with the kid (Russell Nype)," Merman said. So, Berlin went to his room and later produced the counterpoint song. When Berlin played the song for Merman, she said, "We'll never get off the stage."
