Fodé Sylla
Fodé Sylla (born 23 January 1963 in Thiès, Senegal) is a French politician who was a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for France from 1999 to 2004. Early life He spent his youth in Sablé-sur-Sarthe, a French rural commune, the first one inside metropolitan France that ever had a Black mayor, Raphaël Élizé, in 1929–1940. He has a BA in History and a M.A in Political Science and wrote several books, e.g. ''Qui a peur de Malcolm X ?'' (Who is afraid of Malcolm X ?) and ''Préférence nationale : un Apartheid à la française'' (National preference, a French apartheid). SOS Racism He was the second president of the French anti-racist organisation SOS Racisme between 1992 and 1999. Racism has been called a serious social issue in French society by some commentators despite public belief that racism does not exist on a serious scale in France. Antisemitism, as well as prejudice against ethnic Muslims and other non-Christians, have a long history. Acts have been reported against members of resident minority groups including Jews, Berbers, Arabs and Asian people. 2019 police data indicates a total of 1,142 acts classified as "racist" without a religious connotation. ''Le Monde'' (; ) is a French daily afternoon newspaper. It is the main publication of Le Monde Group and reported an average circulation of 323,039 copies per issue in 2009, about 40,000 of which were sold abroad. 1999 European Parliament Election In France
On 13 June 1999 the fifth direct elections to the European Parliament were held in the France. Once again, abstention was very high for this type of election- only 47% of eligible voters voted. The election was also the first French European election to be won by the Socialist Party (PS). In a major surprise and historical upset for the government, Charles Pasqua's and Philippe de Villiers' list uniting Pasqua's new Gaullist Rally for France (RPF) and de Villiers' eurosceptic Movement for France (MPF) list surpassed the list of President Jacques Chirac's RPR-Liberal Democracy, led by Nicolas Sarkozy. The French Communist Party (french: Parti communiste français, ''PCF'' ; ) is a political party in France which advocates the principles of communism. The PCF is a member of the Party of the European Left, and its MEPs sit in the European United Left–Nordic Green Left group.
