Flying Phantom Elite
The Flying Phantom Elite is a French hydrofoil catamaran sailing dinghy that was designed by Martin Fischer and draws on the work of Alex Udin, Franck Cammas and the Groupama sailing team. It is intended as a one-design racer and was first built in 2015. The Flying Phantom Essentiel was developed in 2017 as an easier to sail hydrofoil than the Flying Phantom Elite. Production The design was built by Phantom International in Dinard France from 2015 to about 2017, but the company is no longer in business and it is now out of production. Design The Flying Phantom Elite is a racing sailboat, built predominantly of a pre-preg carbon fibre and Nomex honeycomb sandwich. It has a fractional sloop rig with a carbon fibre mast. Polyester is a category of polymers that contain the ester functional group in every repeat unit of their main chain. Gennaker
A gennaker is a sail that was developed around 1990. Used when sailing downwind, it is a cross between a genoa and a spinnaker. It is not symmetric like a true spinnaker but is asymmetric like a genoa, but the gennaker is not attached to the forestay like a jib or genoa. The gennaker is rigged like a spinnaker but the tack is fastened to the hull or to a bowsprit. It has greater camber than a genoa (but significantly less camber than a spinnaker). This is optimal for generating lift at larger angles of attack. An early form of gennaker was the "gollywhomper", used briefly in the 1870s. The shape of the daggerboard converts the forward motion into a windward lift, countering the leeward push of the sail. A hydrofoil is a lifting surface, or foil, that operates in water. They are similar in appearance and purpose to aerofoils used by aeroplanes. Boats that use hydrofoil technology are also simply termed hydrofoils. A tiller or till is a lever used to steer a vehicle. A transom is the vertical reinforcement which strengthens the stern of a boat. This flat termination of the stern is typically above the waterline. The term was used as far back as Middle English in the 1300s, having come from Latin ''transversus'' (transverse) via Old French ''traversain'' (set crosswise). The stern of a boat is typically vertical. It can be raked such that there is an overhang above the water, as at the bow. A reverse transom is angled from the waterline forwards.
