Flavius Dede
Flavius Dede (c. 1800 – c. 1870) was Mayor of Ponce, Puerto Rico, from 1 January 1850 to 31 March 1850. Background Dede arrived in Ponce in 1826, presumably --according to Scarano-- lured by the promising prospects of the sugar trade. As a young man, he first worked in the merchant firm of Germany's consul in Ponce, Thomas Davidson. By 1831, Dede had established his own merchant firm together with another German emigre, Ernst W. Overmann. In 1841–1842, the partnership purchased Hacienda Flacas, a large estate consisting of some 250 cuerdas of land. His association with Overmann lasted until 1865 when the civil war in the United States led to a precipitous drop in sugar trade and their hacienda went bankrupt. Introduction to politics In 1836, Dede had been one of a team of three assistants to Barrio Playa mayor Sargent Rafael Muñoz. Juan Prats
Juan Prats (ca. 1800 – ca. 1870) was Mayor of Ponce, Puerto Rico, twice in 1849. He was a landowner, owning—among others—Hacienda La Matilde, in Ponce. He was also an appraiser, best known for the contentious appraisal of the plot of land where the Ponce City Hall was built. Background Prats was a Spaniard from Catalonia. In 1841 —eight years before he became mayor— as a result of a legal dispute brought against the municipality of Ponce by Catalina Rodriguez, granddaughter of José Rodriguez (a.k.a., "El Portugués", and after whom sources state Río Portugués is said to have been named), Prats was contracted by the Municipality to appraise a land property that Catalina Rodriguez owned and which the Municipality wanted to build on. Antonio Fortún
Antonio Fortún (ca. 1800 – ca. 1860) was the first Corregidor (position), corregidor Mayor of Ponce, Puerto Rico. He was the top civil authority in the municipality of Ponce from April 1850 to 8 January 1851. He was a Spanish military officer with the rank of Colonel, Coronel. Mayoral term As corregidor, he had been named by the Spanish Crown to serve as Alcalde, but had both administrative duties and judicial powers. Fortún was he first corregidor in Ponce. It resulted from the Spanish Crown Order of 13 December 1849, which mandated Puerto Rico Provincial governor Juan de la Pezuela to institute a corregidor in Ponce. This he did via his Announcement dated 19 March 1850. In the following month (April), Antonio Fortún took over. Hacendado
A ''hacienda'' ( or ; or ) is an estate (or '' finca''), similar to a Roman ''latifundium'', in Spain and the former Spanish Empire. With origins in Andalusia, ''haciendas'' were variously plantations (perhaps including animals or orchards), mines or factories, with many ''haciendas'' combining these activities. Barrio Playa
Barrio Playa, also known as Playa de Ponce, Ponce Playa, or La Playa, is one of the thirty-one barrios that comprise the municipality of Ponce, Puerto Rico. Along with Bucaná, Canas, Vayas, and Capitanejo, Playa is one of the municipality's five coastal barrios. Barrio Playa also incorporates several islands, the largest of which is Caja de Muertos. It was founded in 1831. José De Jesús Fernández
José de Jesús Fernández (a.k.a. José Jesús Fernández) (ca. 1786 – ca. 1866) was Mayor of Ponce, Puerto Rico, from 1 July 1846 to 31 December 1846. He led the municipality under Spain's new ''Decreto Orgánico de 1846.'' Mayoral term De Jesús Fernández was the first mayor in Ponce to command power under the new ''Decreto Orgánico de 1846'' (1846 Organic Decree). Decreto Orgánico de 1846 had been approved on 8 January 1845, and enacted on 27 February 1846 and went in effect on 1 July 1846, the first day that De Jesús Fernández took office.
