Fiona Murtagh (netball)
Fiona Murtagh (born 30 April 1967) is a former England netball international. She was a member of the England teams that won bronze medals at the 1989 World Games, the 1998 Commonwealth Games and the 1999 World Netball Championships. She captained England at the 1998 Commonwealth Games. In 2000, she was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire. Playing career Super Cup During the Super Cup era, Murtagh played for London Tornadoes. She captained a Tornadoes team, that also included Amanda Newton to two Super Cup titles. England Murtagh was a member of the England team that won the bronze medal at the 1989 World Games. In February 1996, she captained England for the first time in a match against Northern Ireland. She subsequently captained England during a 1997 series against New Zealand and at the 1998 Commonwealth Games, when England were again bronze medallists. London Tornadoes
The AENA Super Cup was the top level netball league featuring teams from England between 2001 and 2005. The league was organised by the All England Netball Association. Its main sponsor was Fisher & Paykel and, as a result, it was also known as the Fisher & Paykel Super Cup. It was also referred to as the Super League. London Tornadoes were the Super Cup's most successful team, winning three of the five seasons contested. Northern Thunder and Team Bath Force both won a title each. In 2005–06 it was replaced by the Netball Superleague. Teams The Super Cup featured six teams. The England national netball team's senior and development squads were shared around, and each side was initially allowed to import up to three foreigners. 1991 World Netball Championships
The 1991 World Netball Championships (also known as the Johnson & Johnson World Netball Championship for sponsorship reasons) was the eighth edition of the INF Netball World Cup, a quadrennial premier event in international netball. It was held in Sydney, Australia from 1 to 13 July 1991 and featured 20 teams. At this edition of the tournament, four teams debuted: Cayman Islands, Namibia, Vanuatu and Western Samoa. The tournament was held at two venues with the Sydney Entertainment Centre hosting the final. The format of the 1991 edition saw a change with the format introducing a knockout phase with the top two teams qualifying to the semi-finals where the winner was decided. Australia defeated New Zealand 53-52 to claim their sixth title. London Pulse
London Pulse is an English netball team based at the Copper Box Arena in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Stratford, London. Since 2019 their senior team has played in the Netball Super League, where they have made two grand finals, taking the title in 2025. History National Performance League London Pulse was originally founded in 2016. Former England netball international, Natalie Seaton founded the franchise and subsequently became the CEO. London Pulse initially entered under-17 and under-19 teams in England Netball's National Performance League. They also launched a campaign to become a Netball Super League franchise. In 2018 London Pulse won the National Performance League under-19 title after they beat defending champions, Manchester Thunder, 53–43 in the final. 2007 Netball Superleague Grand Final
The 2007 Netball Superleague Grand Final featured Team Bath and Galleria Mavericks. Team Bath would eventually retain the title but in the grand final it was Mavericks who started the stronger and were leading 10–12 after the first quarter and 21–22 at half time. Both Rachel Dunn and Pamela Cookey initially underperformed for Team Bath. However in the third quarter, Cookey scored 7/8 while Player of the Match, Geva Mentor, made a number of key turnovers to deny Mavericks shooting opportunities. Their combined efforts saw Team Bath take the lead for the first time. However a return of 9/9 from Mavericks' Louisa Brownfield saw Team Bath lead by just 36–35 after three quarters. With just four minutes remaining the score was still 45–45. However after an injury time out, Team Bath returned the stronger with both Dunn and Cookey converting the goals that eventually saw them finish as winners by 53–45. Galleria Mavericks
London Mavericks is an English netball team based at the University of Hertfordshire in Hatfield. Their senior team plays in the Netball Super League where they were a founding member in 2005–06. They are two time Super League champions in 2007–08 and 2011. Due to various sponsorship deals and partnership arrangements, the team has played under several different 'Mavericks' names. They adopted their current name ahead of the 2025 season. Previously the franchise represented just England Netball's East Region, however as London Mavericks this has expanded to include Middlesex from London and South East.
