''Filthy Underneath'' is the fifth studio album by the English musician Nadine Shah, released on 23 February 2024 through EMI North. It received acclaim from critics. Background The writing on the album was influenced by Shah's mother's death during the COVID-19 pandemic as well as her own substance abuse, suicide attempt and the end of her marriage. Critical reception ''Filthy Underneath'' received a score of 87 out of 100 on review aggregator Metacritic based on eleven critics' reviews, indicating "universal acclaim". Nadine Shah
Nadine Petra Katarina Shah (born 16 January 1986) is a British singer and songwriter. Background Shah was born in Whitburn to an English people, English mother from South Shields of part Norwegians, Norwegian ancestry and a British Pakistanis, Pakistani father. She moved to London at the age of 17 to start her career as a jazz singer. Shortly after moving, she became close friends with Amy Winehouse. Career Her debut album, the Ben Hillier-produced ''Love Your Dum and Mad'', was largely inspired by the tragic deaths of two young men. "There are two boys that this album is predominantly about," she continues. "During the period of time these songs were written two very close friends took their own lives." Tenor Saxophone
The tenor saxophone is a medium-sized member of the saxophone family, a group of instruments invented by Adolphe Sax in the 1840s. The tenor and the alto are the two most commonly used saxophones. The tenor is pitched in the key of B (while the alto is pitched in the key of E), and is a transposing instrument in the treble clef, sounding an octave and a major second lower than the written pitch. Modern tenor saxophones which have a high F key have a range from A2 to E5 (concert) and are therefore pitched one octave below the soprano saxophone. The baritone saxophone (sometimes abbreviated to "bari sax") is a member of the saxophone family of instruments, larger (and lower-pitched) than the tenor saxophone, but smaller (and higher-pitched) than the bass saxophone, bass. Pete Wareham
Pete Wareham is a British saxophonist, composer and band leader. He led the genre-defying North African/punk/jazz/dance band Melt Yourself Down and was a member of Nadine Shah’s Mercury Prize-nominated band, Seb Rochford’s Pulled By Magnets and also ran the influential group Acoustic Ladyland. Formerly of Rochford’s now disbanded Mercury Prize-nominated Polar Bear, Wareham has also played saxophone and flute with The Smile, Sons Of Kemet, Mica Levi, James Chance, Supergrass, Ben E King.
