Federal Office Of Transport
The Federal Office of Transport, FOT is a federal authority of the Swiss Confederation. It deals with public transport in Switzerland, i.e. railways, cableways, trolleybuses, buses and ships. It is also responsible for various aspects of freight transport. It implements the policies of the government ( Federal Council), parliament and the Swiss electorate (sovereign) in these areas. The FOT reports to the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC). The office employs 350 people (as of 2023) in five divisions: Business Administration and Organisation, Infrastructure, Finance, Safety and Policy. Peter Füglistaler, who was previously a member of the Executive Board of SBB Infrastructure, has been Director since June 2010. Council Of States (Switzerland)
The Council of States is a house of the Federal Assembly of Switzerland, the other house being the National Council. As the powers of the houses are the same, it is sometimes called perfect bicameralism. It comprises 46 members. Twenty of the country's cantons are represented by two Councillors each. Six cantons, traditionally called " half cantons", are represented by one Councillor each for historical reasons. These are Obwalden, Nidwalden, Basel-Stadt, Basel-Landschaft, Appenzell Ausserrhoden and Appenzell Innerrhoden. The Federal Assembly, also known as the Swiss Parliament, is the federal bicameral parliament of Switzerland. It comprises the 200-seat National Council and the 46-seat Council of States. It meets in Bern in the Federal Palace. The houses have identical powers. Members of both houses represent the cantons, but, whereas seats in the National Council are distributed in proportion to population, each canton has two seats in the Council of States, except the six ' half-cantons', which have one seat each.
