Falkenberg
Falkenberg is a locality and the seat of Falkenberg Municipality, Halland County, Sweden, with 27,813 inhabitants in 2019 (out of a municipal total of about 45,000). It is located at the mouth of river Ätran. The name consists of the Swedish words for falcon (''falk'') and mountain (''berg''). Falkenberg is a popular tourist destination in the summers, and the main beach of the town is Skrea strand. History In the early part of the 13th century the Danish king built a fort on the east shore of the river Ätran, which eventually would give the town its name. Halland was at that time part of Denmark. It is known that falconry was pursued in the area. ''Restrepia falkenbergii'', commonly called the Falkenberg's restrepia, is an epiphytic orchid, found at altitudes between 1,000 and 2,000 m in Colombia. This large orchid lacks pseudobulbs. The erect, thick, leathery leaf is elliptic-ovate in shape. The aerial roots seem like fine hairs. The flowers develop one at a time at the base of the leaf. They are borne on a slender peduncle, originating from the base of the back of the leaf. The long dorsal sepal is erect and ends in a somewhat thicker club-shaped tip. They have fused lateral sepals (synsepals) with a length of about 2.5 cm. Falkenberg Railway (Swedish language, Sw. ''Falkenbergs Järnväg (FJ)'' or ''Pyttebanan'') was an 891 mm gauge narrow gauge railway, narrow gauge railway railway line, line between Falkenberg and Limmared in Sweden. It was inaugurated 28 September 1894 and was in use until 1959/1961. History The first plan to build a railway in the area dates back to 1869 and concerned a railway between Falkenberg and Fegen (locality), Fegen. The plan did however come to nothing. It would take until the construction of Halland Central Railway in 1886 for any further plans to develop.
