Caxias do Sul () is a city in Rio Grande do Sul, Southern Brazil, situated in the state's mountainous Serra Gaúcha region. It was established by Italian Brazilian, Italian immigrants on June 20, 1890. Today it is the second Largest cities in Rio Grande do Sul by population, largest city in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. In 2020, the population of Caxias do Sul was estimated at 517,451 people, many of whom are of Italian and German descent. The demonym of the citizens of Caxias do Sul is ''Caxiense''. Luis Carlos Verzoni Nejar, better known as Carlos Nejar (born January 11, 1939, in Porto Alegre), is a Brazilian poetry, poet, author, translator and critic, and a member of the Academia Brasileira de Letras. One of the most important poets of its generation, Nejar, also called "o poeta do pampa brasileiro", is distinguished for his use of an extensive vocabulary, alliteration, and pandeism. His first book, ''Sélesis'', was published in 1960. Born to a father of Syrian Brazilians, Syrian and Lebanese Brazilians, Lebanese descent, and a mother of French Brazilians, French and Italian Brazilians, Italian descent, Nejar was elected to the fourth seat of the Brazilian Academy of Letters on November 24, 1988, succeeding Viana Moog.
