FS Class 940
The Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS; Italian State Railways) Class 940 (Italian: ''Gruppo 940'') is a 2-8-2 steam tank locomotive, derived from the Class 740 tender locomotive. Design The Class 940 was designed for the Apennine mountains railways, and especially for the Rome- Sulmona-Pescara line, an important coast-to-coast railway that presented steep gradients (up to 2.7%); until then those had been served by 0-6-0 locomotives such as the FS Class 851, that had become inadequate for the increasing needs. Therefore, it was decided to build a locomotive with eight driving wheels, by adapting the frames, the boiler and the engine of the Class 740 to a tank design, also adding a trailing wheel to the wheelbase to enable the new design to run well backwards as well as forwards. Piazza Al Serchio Railway Station
Piazza al Serchio railway station ( it, Stazione di Piazza al Serchio) is a railway station located in the Tuscany Regions of Italy, region of central Italy serving the ''comune'' of Piazza al Serchio. The station is located in the lower part of the village at an altitude of just under 500 m. It was opened on 21 April 1940. The station forms part of the Lucca–Aulla railway and is served exclusively by regional trains operated by Trenitalia, whilst the station itself is managed by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), both of which are subsidiaries of Italy's state-owned rail company Ferrovie dello Stato (FS). In memory of the steam locomotives that formerly operated on the Lucca–Aulla railway, an FS Class 940 locomotive is preserved at the station as a monument. A 15 m Railway turntable, turntable that was used to rotate the steam locomotives is also still visible at the site. Class 851 locomotives were a class of steam locomotives of the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, Italian State Railways (FS). They were designed and built by the Rete Adriatica, Adriatic Network (RA) as machines for line service. In 1905, together with the locomotives of the classes FS FS Class 290, 290, FS Class 600, 600 and 870 ex-RA, they were included among those that the FS deemed worthy of further orders pending the completion of the designs of new classes suitable to cope with the development of passenger and freight traffic resulting from nationalization.In the period of the "second Conventions," between 1885 and 1905, passenger traffic on the network later merged into the FS increased from 1 782 000 to 4 575 000 pkm.
