Eyuphuro
Eyuphuro is a Mozambican band. Eyuphuro's music is a combination of traditional African music and western popular music. Eyuphuro's music is sung mostly in Makua, a Bantu language. The name of the band means "whirlwind" in Macua. History Omar Issa, Gimo Remane and Zena Bacar founded Eyuphuro in 1981. Eyuphuro released the successful album ''Mama Mosambiki'' before its initial breakup in 1990. In 1998, singer Zena Bacar reformed Eyuphuro and in 2001 they released a new album, ''Yellela''. They made three albums over 25 years that were sold around the world, but the band members never saw these profits. Zena Bacar
Bacar in concert in 2016 Zena Bacar (25 August 1949 - 24 December 2017) was a Mozambican singer, a pioneer in popular music in her country. Life Bacar was born a Muslim in Nampula and began her relationship with music by interpreting folkloric themes and dancing in groups mainly composed of men from her village, aged six, and later conquering the fame with which she took her group Eyuphuro to the city of Maputo. Her first song, entitled "Urera Krera", the same as "Vanity without Judgment" in the language of Camões, was recorded in 1980. She and her group Eyuphuro (meaning 'Whirlpool' in Macua) toured Canada in the late 1980's. Marrabenta
Marrabenta is a popular style of Mozambican dance music combining traditional Mozambican dance rhythms with Portuguese folk music. It was developed in Maputo, the capital city of Mozambique, during the 1930s and 1940s. Etymology The name may be derived from the Portuguese word ''rebentar'' (''arrabentar'' in the local vernacular), which means "to break". This may refer to the cheap musical instruments used in this music, which are often played energetically until they fall apart. Vocalist Dilon Djindji claims this refers to the energetic performances he delivered while on tour across Mozambique, as the intensity and vitality of his shows led audiences to believe that he was 'breaking' the emotional limits of those in attendance. The musicians who played Marrabenta came to be called ''arrabenta''. Over time, the name ''Marrabenta'' has grown in popularity and continues to be used today. The Rough Guide To Acoustic Africa
''The Rough Guide To Acoustic Africa'' is a world music compilation album originally released in 2013 featuring acoustic music spanning Sub-Saharan Africa. Part of the World Music Network Rough Guides series, the album contains two discs: an overview of the genre on Disc One, and a "bonus" Disc Two highlighting griot Noumoucounda Cissoko. Disc One features artists hailing from Niger, Madagascar, the DRC, South Africa, Lesotho, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Cameroon, Mali, South Sudan, Sudan, Senegal, and Guinea. All but three tracks are guitar-based. The extensive liner notes were written by Daniel Rosenberg, and Phil Stanton, co-founder of the World Music Network, produced the album. Critical reception The recording received positive reviews. After admitting that compilations spanning many countries typically annoy him, Robert Christgau recounted this one as "soft-spoken" and "pretty" enough to award it an "A−".
