Euphoria Kids
''Euphoria Kids'' is a 2020 young adult fantasy novel by Alison Evans. It tells the coming of age story of three transgender young people named Iris, Babs and "the boy". The story contains elements of magical realism, including the presence of witches, dryads and faeries, and that Iris "grew from a seed in the ground" while Babs is "made of fire". The title refers to the concept of gender euphoria. Evans states in the novel's foreword: In 2024, the novel was reissued in an expanded second edition which added classroom discussion points. Reception Meleika Gesa-Fatafehi of ''The Saturday Paper'' called ''Euphoria Kids'' "a love letter to queer and transgender teens... it’s exhilarating to read about these characters being so open about their identities, and living with such pride". Alison Evans (author)
Alison Evans is an Australian novelist and writer. They are a transgender non-binary person who identifies as bisexual, and their work often features queer and transgender characters. Evans grew up in the town of Emerald, Victoria, Emerald among the Dandenong Ranges, a setting which went on to heavily influence their work. Their first two novellas on Less Than Three Press were 2015's ''Long Macchiatos and Monsters'' and 2016's ''We Go Forward''. Since 2017, they have published three young adult novels with Bonnier Group, Echo Publishing: ''Ida (novel), Ida'', ''Highway Bodies'' and ''Euphoria Kids''. They won the Victorian Premier's Literary Award in the People's Choice category for ''Ida'' in 2018. Gender dysphoria (GD) is the distress a person experiences due to inconsistency between their gender identitytheir personal sense of their own genderand their sex assigned at birth. The term replaced the previous diagnostic label of gender identity disorder (GID) in 2013 with the release of the diagnostic manual DSM-5. The condition was renamed to remove the stigma associated with the term ''disorder''. The International Classification of Diseases uses the term gender incongruence (GI) instead of ''gender dysphoria'', defined as a marked and persistent mismatch between gender identity and assigned gender, regardless of distress or impairment. Not all transgender people have gender dysphoria. Gender nonconformity is not the same thing as gender dysphoria and does not always lead to dysphoria or distress. Francesca Lia Block
Francesca Lia Block (born December 3, 1962) is an American writer of adult and young-adult literature. She wrote the '' Weetzie Bat'' series, which she began while a student at UC Berkeley. Early life and education Block was born in Los Angeles in 1962. Her mother was a poet and her father was the screenwriter and painter Irving Block. She attended North Hollywood High School and the University of California, Berkeley, and later studied for her MFA from the University of California at Riverside. Career Block writes both novels and poetry. Her first two books, ''Moon Harvest'' (1978) and ''Season of Green'' (1979), were small-press illustrated poetry collections, now out of print.
