Estonian Literary Society
Estonian Literary Society ( et, Eesti Kirjandse Selts, abbreviated EKS) is Estonian organization which aims are to popularize literature and literary science related to Estonia, and also to enhance cooperation between Estonian organizations and institutions related to literature. Literary Science
Literary criticism (or literary studies) is the study, evaluation, and interpretation of literature. Modern literary criticism is often influenced by literary theory, which is the philosophical discussion of literature's goals and methods. Though the two activities are closely related, literary critics are not always, and have not always been, theorists. Whether or not literary criticism should be considered a separate field of inquiry from literary theory is a matter of some controversy. For example, the ''Johns Hopkins Guide to Literary Theory and Criticism'' draws no distinction between literary theory and literary criticism, and almost always uses the terms together to describe the same concept. Some critics consider literary criticism a practical application of literary theory, because criticism always deals directly with particular literary works, while theory may be more general or abstract. Founded in 1938, the Estonian Academy of Sciences ( et, Eesti Teaduste Akadeemia) is Estonia's national academy of science in Tallinn. The Estonian Writers Union (Eesti Kirjanike Liit, abbreviated EKL), is a professional association of Estonian writers and literary critics.Marje Jõeste, Küllo Arjakas, ''The Baltic States'', Estonian Encyclopaedia Publishers, 1991, page 64 History The Estonian Writers Union was founded on 8 October 1922 under the name ''Eesti Kirjanike Liit'' at the 3rd Congress of Estonian writers held at the Tallinn Town Hall. On 27 April 1923, the association began the publication of the monthly magazine '' Looming'' ("Creation"), which is one of the most important literary magazines in Estonia. In 1927 the association expanded to Tartu with the opening of a branch there. With the Soviet occupation of Estonia, the Estonian Writers Union was dissolved on 19 October 1940. ''Looming'' is a term found in the study of perception, as it relates directly to psychology. Looming occurs when an object begins moving closer to the eye. As the resulting image becomes increasingly larger on the perceiver's retina, i.e., when an object ''looms'', there is an automatic physiological response to perceive the object as an approaching object or surface, instead of one that is stationary or receding. Johan Kõpp
Johan Kõpp (9 November 1874, Holdre, Kreis Fellin – 21 October 1970, Stockholm) was an Estonian bishop and head of the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church 1939–1944. Biography Kõpp went to high school at the Hugo Treffner Gymnasium in Tartu and then studied theology at the University of Tartu. He graduated from university in 1906. After his studies he initially worked as a high school teacher in Pärnu but from 1909 to 1922 was pastor in Laiuse. Already in 1916 he had however taken up a teaching position at the University of Tartu as one of the first ethnic Estonians to do so after the Estonian Declaration of Independence. From 1920 to 1927 he was deputy rector of the university, and from 1928 to 1937 rector. During the interwar period Kõpp was also leader of the Christian People's Party. Kõpp was instrumental in organising and setting up the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church in 1917 and in 1939 he was elevated to the position of bishop and leader of the church. D ... Julius Mägiste
Julius Mägiste (born Julius Gustavi Mälson; 19 December 1900 – 11 March 1978) was an Estonian linguist. He was born in Kassema village, Tartu County. In 1923 he graduated from the University of Tartu. Since 1925, he taught at the University of Tartu. From 1934 to 1936, he was the head of Mother Tongue Society. In 1944, he fled to Germany and in 1945 to Sweden in Lund. Until 1967, he taught Finno-Ugric languages at Lund University.
