Erich Clar
Erich Clar (23 August 1902 – 27 March 1987) was a German organic chemistry, organic chemist, born in Hřensko (a village directly at the border of Germany and the Czech Republic; Czech: Hřensko, German: Herrnskretschen), who studied polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon chemistry. During world war II he had no participation and no party membership in the Nazi_Party, NSDAP and did research in his "Privatlabor Herrnskretschen" (private laboratory in Herrnskretschen/Hřensko) on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, esp. on the Acene, acenes. He is considered as the father of that field. In 1941, he authored "Aromatische Kohlenwasserstoffe" (Springer-Verlag) and in 1964 the greatly expanded two-volume ''Polycyclic Hydrocarbons'', which described the syntheses, properties, and UV-visible absorption spectra of hundreds of PAHs. Triangulene
Triangulene (also known as Clar's hydrocarbon) is the smallest triplet-ground-state polybenzenoid. It exists as a biradical with the chemical formula . It was first hypothesized by Czech chemist Erich Clar in 1953. Its first confirmed synthesis was published in a February 2017 issue of '' Nature Nanotechnology'', in a project led by researchers David Fox and Anish Mistry at the University of Warwick in collaboration with IBM. Other attempts by Japanese researchers have been successful only in making substituted triangulene derivatives. A six-step synthesis yielded two isomers of dihydrotriangulene which were then deposited on xenon or copper base. The researchers used a combined scanning tunneling and atomic force microscope (STM/AFM) to remove individual hydrogen atoms. The synthesized molecule of triangulene remained stable at high-vacuum low-temperature conditions for four days, giving the scientists plenty of time to characterize it (also using STM/AFM). Hřensko () is a municipality and village in Děčín District in the Ústí nad Labem Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 200 inhabitants. With an elevation of above sea level, it is the lowest situated municipality in the country.
