Elsie Palmer Payne
Elsie Palmer Payne (1884 – 1971) was an American painter known for her landscape and genre painting. Payne was born in San Antonio, Texas on September 9, 1884. She attended Best Art School in San Francisco. In 1912 she married fellow artist Edgar Alwin Payne, with whom she had one child, Evelyn, born in 1914. The couple resided in Chicago for several years and, at that time, Payne assisted her husband in creating several murals. The couple relocated to California in 1918. They both were founding members of the Laguna Beach Art Association. The family led a peripatetic life, visiting Europe several times and living for a time in New York. The couple separated in 1932. Payne settled in Los Angeles. There she taught art and continued her painting. Edgar Alwin Payne
Edgar Alwin Payne (1 March 1883 – 8 April 1947) was an American painter. He was known as a Western landscape painter and muralist. Early life Payne was born near Cassville, Barry County, Missouri, in the heart of the Ozarks.. Cassville is in southwest Missouri, near the Arkansas border. According to the U.S. Census of 1900, he resided with his parents, two sisters and five brothers in Prairie Grove, Washington County, Arkansas; his Alabama-born father was employed as a carpenter. Edgar's occupation was listed as “carpenter, apprentice.” Leaving home on several occasions, Payne painted houses, signs, portraits, murals, and local theater stage sets, to pay his way. Traveling through the Ozarks, then around the Southeast and Midwest, he finally wound up in Chicago, and enrolled to study portrait art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The Carnegie Art Museum is a public art museum owned by the City of Oxnard, California in the building originally occupied by the Oxnard Public Library. The Neo-Classical building, located adjacent to Oxnard's Plaza Park, opened in 1907 as the Oxnard Public Library and was converted into an art museum in 1986. In July 1971, it became the first building in Ventura County and the first Carnegie library in California to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
