Elections In The Maldives
Maldives elects on national level a head of state, the president, and a legislature. The president is elected directly for a five-year term by the people. Its parliament, the Majlis, has 93 members. All members are elected directly for a term of five years from 93 single-member constituencies. In the 2023 presidential elections, Muizzu emerged victorious over his opponent, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. The Democrats (Maldives)
The Democrats () are a political party in the Maldives, formed by a faction within the Maldivian Democratic Party amid a rift between members who supported Mohamed Nasheed. Some of their members were pending expulsion from the party after voting against the party-line and voting to oust sitting cabinet ministers of president Solih's cabinet. The party nominated Ilyas Labeeb and Hussain Amr for its presidential ticket in the 2023 Maldivian presidential election. History Founding The party was founded in 2023 by 12 members who were originally members of a faction in Maldivian Democratic Party loyal to Mohamed Nasheed. The Adhaalath Party (; , AP) is a political party in the Maldives. History The AP was registered as a political party in August 2005, when political parties were allowed to operate for the first time following widespread protests for democracy. Adhaalath has been active in the political arena and has been instrumental in all the recent government changes. Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (; born 4 May 1964), popularly known as Ibu, is a Maldivian politician who served as the 7th President of the Maldives from 2018 to 2023. Solih was a parliamentarian for 15 years, he represented the Hinnavaru constituency and the Lhaviyani Atoll constituency during his tenure.
