The Maldives Development Alliance () is a political party in the Maldives led by Ahmed Shiyam Mohamed. History The party was formed in 2012 by Ahmed Shiyam Mohamed. It was officially recognised by the People's Majlis on 21 October 2013, after it had gained three MPs; Ahmed Shiyam Mohamed, Ahmed Moosa and Ahmed Amir. Ahmed Siyam Mohamed (; born 21 July 1969), often referred to as Sun Siyam, is an Maldivian politician and businessman who has been serving as a Member of the People's Majlis for Dhaalu Meedhoo Constituency since 2014 in the 18th, 19th and 20th Parliament. Malé
Malé is the capital and most populous city of the Maldives. With a population of 211,908 in 2022 within its administrative area and coterminous geographical area of , Malé is one of the most densely populated cities in the world. The city is geographically located in the southern edge of North Malé Atoll ( Kaafu Atoll). People's Majlis
The People's Majlis () is the unicameral legislative body of Maldives. It has the authority to enact, amend and revise laws, as outlined in the Constitution of the Maldives. It is composed of 93 members as of 2024. Each year on the first Monday or Thursday of February, the Majlis is opened by the President of the Maldives. During the opening of ceremony, the president outlines his policies and achievements in his presidential term. The annual state budget is decided here. Its working language is Dhivehi. The Progressive Party of Maldives (, PPM), was a political party in the Maldives. The stated goal of the party was driving Maldives towards an independent and democratic, safe and secure, high income, high human capital, developed nation state with a diversified and robust economy whilst preserving its Islamic heritage. History 2011–2012 The party was formed by Maumoon Abdul Gayoom in 2011 after resigning from his first party, Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), citing corruption of views after new leadership. The political party first emerged from a faction of DRP, named Z-DRP, which was formed by Gayyoom in early 2011. Abdulla Yameen
Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom (; born 21 May 1959) is a Maldivian politician who served as president of the Maldives from 2013 to 2018. Yameen was elected president in the 2013 presidential election as the candidate of the Progressive Party (PPM), defeating Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) leader and former president Mohamed Nasheed in the second round of the re-run, after the initial election was annulled. He was the second democratically elected president of the Republic of the Maldives. Yameen's presidential tenure oversaw a number of infrastructure development projects, such as airports and healthcare facilities, most of which were financed through loans from the Chinese government. 2013 Maldivian Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in the Maldives on 7, 9 and 16 November 2013. The first round was held on 7 September. As no candidate received a majority, a second round was planned to be held in 28 September between the candidates who received the most votes in the first round, former President Mohamed Nasheed (who was contesting in the election following his controversial resignation, which he and many claimed was a coup d'état amidst the 2011–12 Maldives political crisis) and Abdulla Yameen, paternal half-brother of former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. Incumbent President Mohamed Waheed Hassan was eliminated in the first round after receiving fewer votes than three other candidates. 2014 Maldivian Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in the Maldives on 22 March 2014. The Progressive Party of Maldives and its allies won 53 seats. Background The elections were held after the controversial presidential elections in which Abdulla Yameen defeated Mohamed Nasheed of the Maldivian Democratic Party. Following the elections the Supreme Court dismissed the Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the Election Commission for contempt of court. The MDP protested, but did not boycott the parliamentary elections. One the day before the elections Qasim Ibrahim of the Jumhooree Party requested that the Supreme Court to delay the elections due to the Election Commission not having a full complement of members. However, his request was rejected. Electoral system The 85 seats in the People's Majlis were elected in single-member constituencies using the first-past-the-post system. 2019 Maldivian Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in the Maldives on 6 April 2019. The result was a landslide victory for the Maldivian Democratic Party, which won 65 of the 87 seats in the People's Majlis. This was the first time in Maldivian history that one party was able to secure a supermajority in parliament.
