A federation (also called a federal state) is an entity characterized by a political union, union of partially federated state, self-governing provinces, states, or other regions under a #Federal governments, federal government (federalism). Elections In Kosovo
Parliamentary elections to the Assembly of Kosovo (, Serbian Cyrillic: , transliterated ) have been held eight times since 2001, with the latest in February 2021. The Assembly was an institution within the Provisional Institutions of Self-Government (PISG) established by the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) to provide 'provisional, democratic self-government' in advance of a decision on the final status of Kosovo. Kosovo, formerly a province of Serbia, came under UN administration in 1999 and unilaterally declared its independence in February 2008. 2025 German Federal Election
The 2025 German federal election was held in Germany on 23 February 2025 to elect the 630 members of the List of members of the 21st Bundestag, 21st Bundestag, down from 736 in 2021 due to reforms in seat distribution. Elections In Germany
Several articles in several parts of the Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany govern elections and establish constitutional requirements such as the secret ballot, and the requirement that all elections be conducted in a free and fair manner. The Basic Law also requires that the federal legislature enact detailed federal laws to govern elections; electoral law(s). One such article is Article 38, regarding the election of deputies in the federal Bundestag. Article 38.2 of the Basic Law establishes universal suffrage: "Any person who has attained the age of eighteen shall be entitled to vote; any person who has attained the age of majority may be elected." 2025 Bermudian General Election
General elections were held in Bermuda on 18 February 2025 to elect all 36 members of the House of Assembly. Background Prior to the election, the PLP was the dominant party in Bermudian politics, having unseated the OBA in the 2017 general election. In the subsequent 2020 election, the PLP expanded its majority to 30 seats. Premier Edward David Burt has governed Bermuda since winning the 2017 general election. 2025 Abkhazian Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in the Republic of Abkhazia on 15 February 2025 following the 2024 Abkhazian protests. The protests resulted in the resignation of Aslan Bzhania as president of Abkhazia. As no candidate received a majority of the vote in the first round, a second round was held on 1 March. Acting president Badra Gunba was elected, receiving 56% of the vote. Background The election was called after president Aslan Bzhania resigned in November 2024 due to protests against an agreement allowing wealthy Russians to purchase property in Abkhazia. He was replaced on an acting basis by his vice president, Badra Gunba. On 28 November 2024, the People's Assembly of Abkhazia announced that new presidential elections would be held on 15 February 2025, with the winner to be inaugurated within the next 30 days of the results being declared. Abkhazia elects, on the national level, a head of state – the president – and a legislature. The president is elected for a five-year term by the people. The People's Assembly has 35 members, elected for a five-year term in single seat constituencies. On 28 February 1996, Abkhazia's Parliament adopted a referendum law according to which referendums may be initiated by Parliament, by the President, or by a group of citizens who have collected at least 10,000 signatures. Since then, Abkhazia has held two referendums in 1999 to approve its constitution and declaration of independence, and one in 2016 to hold early presidential elections, but it was declared invalid due to low voter turnout. 2025 Swiss Referendums
Several referendums will be held in Switzerland during 2025, with national votes on 9 February, 28 September and 11 November. February referendum Only one popular initiative made it to the ballot for this first poll of the year, the "Environmental Responsibility Initiative", supported by the youth branch of Green Party. If accepted, Switzerland would have ten years to reduce consumption and economic activity to "sustainable levels". The initiative did not indicate how these objectives should be met. Liechtensteiner Vaterland
''Liechtensteiner Vaterland'' (; lit. "Liechtenstein Fatherland") is the largest daily newspaper in Liechtenstein. Published by Vaduzer Medienhaus AG, it is the official newspaper of the Patriotic Union party. History In January 1936, Christian-Social People's Party and Liechtenstein Homeland Service merged to form the Patriotic Union. As a result, the parties respective newspapers, the '' Liechtensteiner Nachrichten'' and ''Stimme für heimische Wirtschaft, Kultur und Volkstum'' merged to form the ''Liechtensteiner Vaterland'' with Carl Freiherr von Vogelsang as the first editor in chief. The newspaper came under controversy in January 1937 when Vogelsang publicly denounced Jews living in Liechtenstein and sent numerous letters detailing them to officials in Nazi Germany. 2025 Liechtenstein General Election
General elections were held in Liechtenstein on 9 February 2025 to elect the 25 members of the Landtag of Liechtenstein, Landtag. The Patriotic Union (Liechtenstein), Patriotic Union (VU) won 10 seats, while the Progressive Citizens' Party (FBP) won seven, the lowest in its history. The Democrats for Liechtenstein (DpL) won six seats, being the highest amount of seats won by a third party in Liechtenstein's history. The Free List (Liechtenstein), Free List (FL) won two seats. Voter turnout was 76.3%. Incumbent prime minister Daniel Risch did not run for re-election. The VU nominated Brigitte Haas for prime minister, while the FBP nominated Ernst Walch. The DpL nominated Thomas Rehak and Erich Hasler as government candidates, being the first time the party has done so.
