Eemsmond (; en, Ems Mouth) is a former municipality with a population of 15,864 in the north of the province of Groningen in the northeast of the Netherlands. On 1 January 2019 it merged with the municipalities of Bedum, De Marne and Winsum to form the new municipality Het Hogeland. History The municipality of Hefshuizen was established on 1 January 1979 by merging the municipalities of Uithuizen and Uithuizermeeden. On 1 January 1990, the municipalities of Kantens, Usquert, and Warffum were added. On 1 January 1992, the name of the municipality was changed from ''Hefshuizen'' to ''Eemsmond'', which means Ems Mouth. Wadden Sea
The Wadden Sea ( nl, Waddenzee ; german: Wattenmeer; nds, Wattensee or ; da, Vadehavet; fy, Waadsee, longname=yes; frr, di Heef) is an intertidal zone in the southeastern part of the North Sea. It lies between the coast of northwestern continental Europe and the range of low-lying Frisian Islands, forming a shallow body of water with tidal flats and wetlands. Stitswerd is a village in the municipality of Het Hogeland, Groningen, the Netherlands. It had a population of around 45 in January 2017. Stitswerd is located on a ''wierde'' near the estuary of the former river Fivel. Stitswerd has the highest postal code in the Netherlands (9999 XL). History The village was first mentioned in the second half of the 9th century as Stukisweret, and means "''terp'' (artificial living hill) of Stukki (person)". The Dutch Reformed church dates from the 13th century and is located on the ''terp'', however part of the terp has been excavated. The church is sometimes in service, but is also used for cultural activities. Stitswert was home to 209 people 1840. It was part of Kantens municipality before 1990, when it became part of Hefshuizen. Startenhuizen

It is divided in two parts, the biggest in Eemsdelta, and a few farms in Het Hogeland. Startenhuizen is not a statistical entity, and the postal authorities have placed it under Startenhuizen. It had place name signs, however some have been removed. The hamlet was first mentioned in 1391 as "to Stertingahusum". The etymology is unclear. In 1590, the church was demolished, and never replaced. Startenhuizen was home to 112 people in 1840. Nowadays, it consists of about 17 houses. Roodeschool (Gronings: ''Roschoul'') is a community situated in the northeast of Groningen (province), Groningen province in the Netherlands and forming part of the municipality of Het Hogeland. It had a population of around 860 in January 2017. Roodeschool's Roodeschool railway station, railway station is the second northernmost in the Netherlands and forms part of the Sauwerd–Roodeschool railway, Groningen-Roodeschool railway line. Oosternieland
Oosternieland is a village in the municipality of Het Hogeland, Groningen, the Netherlands. It is located just north of Zijldijk, along the N46 road between the city of Groningen and the Eemshaven seaport. It had a population of around 100 in January 2017. History The village was first mentioned in 1448 as "Enghelbert up den Nyen lande", and means "eastern new land". Oost (east) has been added to distinguish from Westernieland. The land was reclaimed after a dike was built in 1317. The village has a ''terp'' (artificial living hill) which contains a church from the 13th century. It used to have a tower, but it was demolished in 1822, and a ridge turret was place on the church instead. Oosternieland was home to 308 people in 1840. Oosteinde is a village in the municipality of Het Hogeland, Groningen, the Netherlands. It is located southeast of Roodeschool, near the river Groote Tjariet. It had a population of around 160 in January 2017. History The village was first mentioned between 1851 and 1855 as Oosteinde, and means "eastern end".
