Edmond Yafil
Edmond Nathan Yafil (1874 – October 1928) was an Algerian composer. Biography Native Jew born in Algiers in 1874, Yafil began, as all the musicians of his time, by attending the Moorish cafés of the old Casbah Algiers places where perpetuated the tradition of sanaa music, also referred to as Andalusian classical music. He will collaborate with Jules Rouanet on the cataloging of sanaa music and in theater with Mahieddine Bachtarzi and Ali Sellali. The History of the Jews in Algeria refers to the history of the Jewish community of Algeria, which dates to the 1st century CE. In the 15th century, many Spanish Jews fled to the Maghreb, including today's Algeria, following expulsion from Spain and Portugal; among them were respected Jewish scholars, including Isaac ben Sheshet (Ribash) and Simeon ben Zemah Duran (Rashbatz). Algeria won its independence in 1962, and by the Nationality Code of 1963 denied citizenship to all non-Muslims. Algeria's Jews, most of whom had held French citizenship since 1870, left with the pied-noirs. The vast majority moved to France, and the rest moved to Israel. Allalou (March 30, 1902 – February 19, 1992) was an Algerian playwright, theatre director and actor known as ''the father of Algerian theater''. Early life Allalou was born Ali Sellali on March 3, 1902, in the Casbah of Algiers. Biography Allalou who lost his father early began at the age of thirteen to work to support his family. He successively practiced jobs as pharmacy clerk, bookseller and tramway worker. His interest in the artistic representation manifested itself early. Mahieddine Bachtarzi (15 December 18976 February 1986) was an Algerian singer of opera (tenor), actor, writer and director of the TNA (Théâtre National Algérien). He was also the author of some 400 musical works, with a career that spanned over 70 years, gaining many honors throughout his life.
