Ed Gossett
Ed Lee Gossett (January 27, 1902 – November 6, 1990) was a U.S. Representative from Texas. Born in a sawmill camp known as Yellow Pine, near Many, Sabine Parish, Louisiana, Gossett moved to Texas in 1908 with his parents, who settled on a farm near Henrietta, Clay County and attended the rural schools of Clay and Garza Counties, Texas. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, A.B., 1924 and the law school of the same university, LL.B., 1927. He was admitted to the bar the latter year and commenced practice in Vernon, Texas. He moved to Wichita Falls, Texas, in 1937 and continued the practice of law. He served as district attorney of the forty-sixth judicial district 1933-1937. Gossett was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-sixth and to the six succeeding Congresses and served from January 3, 1939, until his resignation on July 31, 1951. Many () is a town in, and the parish seat of Sabine Parish in western Louisiana. The population was 2,853 at the 2010 census, a decrease of 36 or 1.246 percent from 2000. History The site where Many currently sits was originally a Belgian settlement believed to be founded in 1837. The Town of Many was officially founded March 21, 1843, when the Louisiana Legislature passed Act 46. The act split Natchitoches Parish into several new parishes, including Sabine Parish. That Act declared that the seat of government for the newly created Sabine Parish, be named in honor of Colonel James B. Many, who commanded the garrison at the nearby Fort Jesup. Vernon is a city and the county seat of Wilbarger County, Texas, United States. and as of the 2010 Census had a population of 11,002. History The original town was called Eagle Springs by the indigenous community as early as 1858. After the American Civil War, more settlers began moving in the area, and in 1880, they applied for a post office as Eagle Flat. However, the U.S. Post Office rejected the name, saying too many Texas towns were already called Eagle something. The town then chose the name Vernon, after George Washington's home, Mount Vernon. An estimated seven million head of cattle passed through Vernon on the Great Western Cattle Trail between 1873 and the 1890s.
