''Ectoedemia septembrella'' is a moth of the family Nepticulidae. It is found in most of Europe, east to the eastern part of the Palearctic realm. It is also found in the Near East. The wingspan is 5–6 mm. The head is ferruginous to ochreous with a whitish collar. The antennal eyecaps are whitish. The posterior tarsi are whitish. The forewings are dark fuscous, somewhat pale-sprinkled and with a subtriangular whitish tornal spot; tips of apical cilia whitish. The hindwings are grey. Adults are on wing in May and June and again in August. The Consortium for the Barcode of Life (CBOL) was an international initiative dedicated to supporting the development of DNA barcoding as a global standard for species identification. CBOL's Secretariat Office is hosted by the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, in Washington, DC. A leaf miner is any one of numerous species of insects in which the larval stage lives in, and eats, the leaf tissue of plants. The vast majority of leaf-mining insects are moths ( Lepidoptera), sawflies (Symphyta, the mother clade of wasps), and flies ( Diptera). Some beetles also exhibit this behavior. Like woodboring beetles, leaf miners are protected from many predators and plant defenses by feeding within the tissues of the leaves, selectively eating only the layers that have the least amount of cellulose.
