Eastern Charlotte is a rural community in the Canadian province of New Brunswick. It was formed through the 2023 New Brunswick local governance reforms. History Eastern Charlotte was incorporated on January 1, 2023 via the amalgamation of the former town of St. George and the former village of Blacks Harbour as well as the concurrent annexation of adjacent unincorporated areas. Geography Eastern Charlotte is the northern terminus for the year-round Eastern Charlotte to Grand Manan Island Ferry operated by Coastal Transport Fishing has been a vital part of its existence for over 200 years. Magaguadavic River
The Magaguadavic River ( ; ) is a historic Canada, Canadian river located in the province of New Brunswick. The name "Magaguadavic" is a Maliseet / Passamaquoddy term that is believed to translate into "River of Eels". Description With a meander length of , the Magaguadavic River is the sixth longest river in the province. It rises as an outlet of Magaguadavic Lake in York County, New Brunswick, York County, flowing south through a low coastal mountain range called the St. Croix Highlands before emptying into Passamaquoddy Bay, a sub-basin of the Bay of Fundy. Connors Brothers Limited was a fish packing company founded by Lewis and Patrick Connors in the 1880s and based in Blacks Harbour, New Brunswick. It is known by the Brunswick brand, and is the only remaining producer of sardines in North America. Brunswick claims to be the largest sardine producer in the world. Coastal Transport Limited (Coastal Transport) is a ferry company operating in eastern Canada on the Bay of Fundy with headquarters in Saint John, New Brunswick. Blacks Harbour
Blacks Harbour is a community in the rural community of Eastern Charlotte, New Brunswick, Canada. It held village status prior to 2023. It is on a harbour of the same name opening onto the Bay of Fundy. It is 15 kilometres southeast of the town of St. George, 3 kilometres west of Beaver Harbour and 56 kilometres east from the town of St. Stephen on Route 176. History Blacks Harbour's exact origin is unknown, possibly an early family name. Post office dates from 1889. On 1 January 2023, Blacks Harbour amalgamated with St. George and all or part of five local service districts to form the new incorporated rural community of Eastern Charlotte. Local governance reform in the Canadian province of New Brunswick was implemented on January 1, 2023. This resulted in a significant reorganization of the local government entities in the province, including a reduction in the number of entities from 340 to 89, consisting of 77 local governments and 12 rural districts nested within 12 regional service commissions.
