Eastern Aircraft Division
The Eastern Aircraft Division was formed by the General Motors, General Motors Corporation (GM) for the duration of the Second World War, to manufacture Grumman's Grumman F4F Wildcat, Wildcat and Grumman TBF Avenger, Avenger carrier-based aircraft under license. The division comprised five plants on the East Coast of the United States, which, since the declaration of war in December 1941, had had to cease production of automobiles or car components.On December 11, 1941, the Office of Production Management issued a curtailment order on automobile production - History, 1944, p. 17 Created in January 1942, the new organization soon became operational. The Vought F4U Corsair is an American fighter aircraft that saw service primarily in World War II and the Korean War. Designed and initially manufactured by Chance Vought, the Corsair was soon in great demand; additional production contracts were given to Goodyear, whose Corsairs were designated FG, and Brewster, designated F3A. The Corsair was designed and principally operated as a carrier-based aircraft, and entered service in large numbers with the U.S. Navy and Marines in World War II. The Grumman F8F Bearcat is an American single-engined, carrier-based fighter aircraft introduced in late World War II. Folding Wing
A folding wing is a wing configuration design feature of aircraft to save space and is typical of carrier-based aircraft that operate from the limited deck space of aircraft carriers. The folding allows the aircraft to occupy less space in a confined hangar because the folded wing normally rises over the fuselage decreasing the floor area of the aircraft. Vertical clearance is also limited in aircraft carrier hangar decks. Lofting
Lofting is a Technical drawing, drafting technique to generate curved lines. It is used in plans for streamlined objects such as aircraft and boats. The lines may be drawn on wood and the wood then cut for advanced woodworking. The technique can be as simple as bending a flexible object, such as a long strip of thin wood or thin plastic, so that it passes over three non-linear points, and scribing the resultant curved line; or as elaborate as plotting the line using computers or mathematical tables.
