Earle Swensen
Earle Swensen was an American businessperson. He was born in San Francisco and grew up in the city. Swensen was married to Nora who died in 1995. During World War II, he served in South Pacific and during that time learnt how to make ice cream. In 1948, Swensen founded Swensen's ice cream near Russian Hill, San Francisco. The first store was known as See Us Freeze Ice Cream. Swensen's Inc. is an international chain restaurant, chain of ice cream restaurants that was founded in San Francisco, California, United States. History The company was founded in 1948 by Earle Swensen, who learned to make ice cream while serving in the United States Navy, U.S. Navy during World War II. Swensen opened his first shop at the corner of Union and Hyde Streets, along the San Francisco cable car system, cable car tracks in Russian Hill, San Francisco, Russian Hill in San Francisco at what had been a failed ice cream parlor. Although vanilla was his lifelong favorite, he developed more than 150 flavors, which he marketed under the motto "Good as Father Used to Make". Russian Hill, San Francisco
Russian Hill is a neighborhood of San Francisco, California. It is named after one of San Francisco's 44 hills, and one of its original "Seven Hills". Location Russian Hill is directly to the north (and slightly downhill) from Nob Hill, to the south (uphill) from Fisherman's Wharf, and to the west of the North Beach neighborhood. The Hill is bordered on its west side by parts of the neighborhoods of Cow Hollow and the Marina District. At the northern foot of the hill is Ghirardelli Square, which sits on the waterfront of the San Francisco Bay, Aquatic Park, and Fisherman's Wharf, a popular tourist area.
