Dun Church
Dun Church () is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Namsos Municipality in Trøndelag county, Norway. It is located in the village of Dun in the central part of the island of Jøa. It is the main church for the Fosnes parish which is part of the Namdal prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Nidaros. The white, wooden church was built in a long church style in 1949 using plans drawn up by the architect Arne Sørvig. The church seats about 400 people. History The earliest existing historical records of the church date back to the year 1533, but the old church was likely built around the year 1250. Originally, the church served the whole Fosnes prestegjeld which included most of today's Namsos Municipality and Flatanger Municipality. The first church was located at Fosnes (along the Fosnavågen bay), about to the northeast of today's church site. A ''prestegjeld'' was a geographic and administrative area within the Church of Norway (''Den Norske Kirke'') roughly equivalent to a parish. This traditional designation was in use for centuries to divide the kingdom into ecclesiastical areas that were led by a parish priest. ''Prestegjelds'' began in the 1400s and were officially discontinued in 2012. The ''Great Norwegian Encyclopedia'' (, abbreviated ''SNL'') is a Norwegian-language online encyclopedia. It has several subdivisions, including the Norsk biografisk leksikon. Arne Fjellbu
Arne Fjellbu (19 December 1890 – 9 October 1962) was a Norwegian bishop. During World War II, he played a central role in the Church's resistance against the Nazi authorities. He was bishop of the Diocese of Nidaros from 1945 to 1960. Early life and career He was born in Decorah, Iowa in the United States as a son of vicar Karl Anton Fjellbu (1865–1933) and his wife Ellen Johanne Retvedt (1865–1941). In 1900, the family moved from the Red River Valley to Norway. He took his examen artium at Kristiansand Cathedral School in 1909. He then graduated from the Royal Frederick University with the cand.theol. degree in 1914, completed the practical-theological seminary and was ordained in 1916. In October 1918 he married Karen Christie (1892–1965). He was a priest in Berlin from 1916 to 1917, acting vicar in Borge from 1919-1921, and auxiliary priest in the Nidaros Cathedral from 1921-1927. Fosnes Chapel
Fosnes Chapel () is a chapel of the Church of Norway in Namsos Municipality in Trøndelag county, Norway. It is located at Fosnesvågen, on the northeastern coast of the island of Jøa. It is an annex chapel for the Fosnes parish which is part of the Namdal prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Nidaros. The white, wooden chapel was built in a long church style in 1926. The church seats about 45 people. The church is not regularly used for services, but it is used for funerals at the adjacent cemetery. There is an annual worship service held at the chapel once each summer at Olsok. Ole Scheistrøen
Ole Olsen Scheistrøen (16 August 1833 – 4 February 1921) was a Norwegian architect and builder. Scheistrøen had no formal architectural education and he, in fact, referred to himself as a builder and not an architect. However, he designed about 50 Norwegian churches, in addition to designing twelve churches after drawings by other architects, including six by Jacob Wilhelm Nordan. Biography Ole Olsen Scheistrøen was born on 16 August 1833 in the village of Skei (historically spelled ''Schei'') in what is now Surnadal Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway.
