Dougie Young
Dougie Young (30 August 1933 – 1 April 1991) was a singer and songwriter from South West Queensland. Young had a white father (Frank Young) and a Gurnu mother (Olive Kathleen née McCarthy). Earlier in his life he worked as a stockman, during which he learnt the guitar and started writing songs. He married Christina Johnson on 11 December 1955 at St Therese's Catholic Mission Church at Wilcannia. A riding accident in 1957 ended his working as a stockman. In 1963 or 1964 Jeremy Beckett, an anthropologist made field recordings of Young, many of which were released in 1965 as an EP called ''Land Where the Crow Flies Backwards'' (Wattle). The title track has since been covered by Gary Shearston, Athol McCoy, Chad Morgan and Roger Knox. He was recorded twice more, first in Walgett in 1969 and then in Sydney in 1979 (soon after a report of his death). Mitchell is a rural town and locality in the Maranoa Region, Queensland, Australia. The town services the local area, a cattle and sheep farming district. In the , the locality of Mitchell had a population of 995 people. Geography Mitchell is on the Warrego Highway, west of Brisbane, west of Toowoomba, west of Miles, west of Roma and east of Charleville. The Warrego Highway passes through town to form the main street, Cambridge Street. Roger Knox
Roger Knox (born 1948) is an Australian country singer, nicknamed "the Black Elvis" and "Koori King of Country". Early life and education Knox was born in 1948 in Moree, New South Wales. He is of the Gamilaroi nation, an Aboriginal Australian people. Knox grew up in the Toomelah Aboriginal Mission near Boggabilla, which is near the border between New South Wales and Queensland. Knox comes from a family with 11 children. His mother was a stolen child, who was taken from her parents as a baby and raised in a children's home in Bomaderry. Knox was not allowed to attend the high school in Goondiwindi, but instead was sent by the mission to work without pay at one of their properties. Knox has said that the first music he heard growing up was gospel music, which his grandmother, who taught Sunday school, played. The Sounds of Australia, formerly the National Registry of Recorded Sound, is the National Film & Sound Archive's selection of sound recordings deemed culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant and relevant for Australia. It was founded in 2007. History The National Registry of Recorded Sound was established in 2007 by the National Film and Sound Archive to encourage appreciation of the diversity of sounds recorded in Australia, since the first phonographs made by the Edison Manufacturing Company were available in Australia in the mid-1890s. The earliest recording in the archive is "The Hen Convention", a song recorded before 15 January 1897 by an amateur sound recordist, Thomas Rome of Warrnambool, who imported the most modern equipment from the United States. The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA), known as ScreenSound Australia from 1999 to 2004, is Australia's audiovisual archive, responsible for developing, preserving, maintaining, promoting, and providing access to a national collection of film, television, sound, radio, video games, new media, and related documents and artefacts. The collection ranges from works created in the late nineteenth century when the recorded sound and film industries were in their infancy, to those made in the present day. Wilcannia
Wilcannia is a small town located within the Central Darling Shire in north western New South Wales, Australia. Located on the Darling River, the town was the third largest inland port in the country during the river boat era of the mid-19th century. At the , Wilcannia had a population of 735. History The area lies in the traditional lands of the Barkindji people, who call the river "Baaka". The name Wilcannia is said to be derived from an indigenous term for either "gap in the bank where floodwaters escape" or "wild dog". Neither meaning has been linguistically verified.
