Dornoch Light Railway
The Dornoch Light Railway was a branch railway in Scotland that ran from on the Far North Line to Dornoch, the county town of Sutherland. It opened in 1902, having been heavily subsidised by the fourth Duke of Sutherland. It was worked by the Highland Railway. Although it provided a useful link, the journey to Inverness was circuitous, and the development of road services for goods and passengers led to a steep decline, and it closed in 1960. Conception The Sutherland Railway opened its line to Golspie in 1868, part of a route that eventually connected Inverness to Thurso and Wick, operated as the Far North Line. The Dornoch Firth presented a considerable natural barrier to the direct route of the line, although a crossing at Meikle Ferry would have been possible, putting Dornoch (population 2,861 in 1861) on the main line. Dornoch (; gd, Dòrnach ; sco, Dornach) is a town, seaside resort, parish and former royal burgh in the county of Sutherland in the Highlands of Scotland. It lies on the north shore of the Dornoch Firth, near to where it opens into the Moray Firth to the east. The town is within the Highland local government council area. The town is near the A9 road, to which it is linked by the A949 and the B9168. The town also has a grass air strip suitable for small aircraft and helicopters. History Of The Far North Of Scotland Railway Line
The Far North Line was built in several stages through sparsely populated and undulating terrain. Extending to , it runs north from Inverness to Wick and Thurso in Caithness, and currently carries a regular passenger train service. It was completed in 1874, running round the western margin of the firths north of Inverness and then keeping to the coast as far as Helmsdale. From that point it turns inland through Forsinard, returning to the far north-east coast at Wick and Thurso. Some intermediate stations were closed in 1960 but despite the construction of major road bridges across the firths significantly shortening the route by road, the line has seen some revival at the southern end due to housing development, and it has a secure future. The Great Western Railway (GWR) 1600 Class is a class of 0-6-0 pannier tank steam locomotive designed for light branch lines, short-distance freight transfers and shunting duties. History The class was based on the 2021 class designed by Dean and built from 1897 onwards. The 2021 class was in its turn an enlargement of the 850 class designed by Armstrong in 1874. Highland Railway W Class
The Highland Railway W class were four small 0-4-4T locomotives built by the Highland Railway in 1905–1906 to the design of locomotive superintendent Peter Drummond. They were the last engines that were built at the company's Lochgorm works in Inverness, and were used on branch line services. Predecessor ''Dunrobin'' was an 0-4-4T built in 1895 by Sharp, Stewart & Co. for the 4th Duke of Sutherland. The W class were near-clones of ''Dunrobin''. Numbers / Names Service All four locomotives passed to the LMS in 1923, where they were numbered 15051–15054 and given power classification '0P'.
