Dora Emdin
Dora M Emdin (4 August 1912 – 9 April 1945) was a female English international table tennis player. Table tennis career She won a bronze medal at the 1934 World Table Tennis Championships in the women's singles. She won another bronze at the 1938 World Table Tennis Championships The 1938 World Table Tennis Championships were held in London from January 24 to January 29, 1938. The pool stages were held at the Royal Albert Hall with the finals at the Wembley Empire Pool and Sports Arena. The World Table Tennis Championships are table tennis competitions sanctioned by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF). The World Championships have been held since 1926, biennially since 1957. Five individual events, which include men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's double and mixed doubles, are currently held in odd numbered years. The World Team Table Tennis Championships, which include men's team and women's team events, were first their own competition in 2000. The Team Championships are held in even numbered years. Table tennis, also known as ping-pong and whiff-whaff, is a sport in which two or four players hit a lightweight ball, also known as the ping-pong ball, back and forth across a table using small solid rackets. It takes place on a hard table divided by a net. Except for the initial serve, the rules are generally as follows: Players must allow a ball played toward them to bounce once on their side of the table and must return it so that it bounces on the opposite side. A point is scored when a player fails to return the ball within the rules. Play is fast and demands quick reactions. Margaret Osborne (table Tennis)
Lucy Margaret Knott ( Osborne, 7 July 1913 – April 1987) was an English international table tennis and tennis player. Table tennis career Osborne won five World Table Tennis Championship medals; In the 1935 World Table Tennis Championships she won a mixed doubles bronze medal with Adrian Haydon and two years later she won another bronze with Wendy Woodhead in the women's doubles at the 1937 World Table Tennis Championships. Two more medals were won during the 1938 World Table Tennis Championships in the singles and in the doubles with Dora Emdin. A gold medal was finally won when she was a member of the winning team in the 1947 World Table Tennis Championships. She also won eight English Open titles. English Open (table Tennis)
The English Open was a table tennis tournament in England, last staged by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) in Sheffield in 2011. History The tournament was first held as the English Open in 1927 by the English Table Tennis Association. Apart from a wartime break in the early 1940s, the tournament was held every year until 1980, and then every two years until the early 1990s. In 1996, the ITTF decided to include that year's English Open in Kettering as the very first event of the first ever ITTF Pro Tour. The tournament went on to feature in the ITTF Pro Tour five more times, in 1997, 1999, 2001, 2009 and in 2011, when it was held for the last time.
