Margaret Osborne (table Tennis)
Lucy Margaret Knott ( Osborne, 7 July 1913 – April 1987) was an English international table tennis and tennis player. Table tennis career Osborne won five World Table Tennis Championship medals; In the 1935 World Table Tennis Championships she won a mixed doubles bronze medal with Adrian Haydon and two years later she won another bronze with Wendy Woodhead in the women's doubles at the 1937 World Table Tennis Championships. Two more medals were won during the 1938 World Table Tennis Championships in the singles and in the doubles with Dora Emdin. A gold medal was finally won when she was a member of the winning team in the 1947 World Table Tennis Championships. She also won eight English Open titles. Upton-upon-Severn
Upton-upon-Severn (or Upton on Severn, etc. and locally simply Upton) is a town and civil parish in the Malvern Hills District of Worcestershire, England. Lying on the A4104 (formerly A440), the 2011 census recorded a population of 2,881 for the town. Upton is situated on the west bank of the River Severn and is located southeast of Malvern. The town has a distinctive tower and copper-clad cupola – known locally as the " Pepperpot" – the only surviving remnant of the former church. Its replacement, also dedicated to St Peter and St Paul, was designed by Sir Arthur Blomfield. History Until the later half of the 20th century, the bridge at Upton was the only one across the River Severn between Worcester and Tewkesbury; the present bridge was built in 1940. English Open (table Tennis)
The English Open was a table tennis tournament in England, last staged by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) in Sheffield in 2011. History The tournament was first held as the English Open in 1927 by the English Table Tennis Association. Apart from a wartime break in the early 1940s, the tournament was held every year until 1980, and then every two years until the early 1990s. In 1996, the ITTF decided to include that year's English Open in Kettering as the very first event of the first ever ITTF Pro Tour. The tournament went on to feature in the ITTF Pro Tour five more times, in 1997, 1999, 2001, 2009 and in 2011, when it was held for the last time. The record for the most men's singles tournament wins is held by Richard Bergmann, who won six titles between 1939 and 1954, including two while representing Austria and four while representing England. Edgbaston
Edgbaston () is an affluent suburban area of central Birmingham, England, historically in Warwickshire, and curved around the southwest of the city centre. In the 19th century, the area was under the control of the Gough-Calthorpe family and the Gillott family who refused to allow factories or warehouses to be built in Edgbaston, thus making it attractive for the wealthier residents of the city.
