Donald Henry Barron
Donald Henry Barron (April 9, 1905 – August 24, 1993) was an American reproductive biologist who was born in Flandreau, South Dakota and received his B.A. in Chemistry at Carleton College, his M.S. in Botany at Iowa State College and his Ph.D. at Yale University. In March 1933, he joined Edgar D. Adrian's laboratory in Cambridge University where he investigated the Slow potential wave in spinal cord collaborated with Bryan Matthews and received an honorary M.A. degree from there in 1936. Barron and his family to return to the United States in 1940. From 1943 to 1969, he worked at Yale and then moved to University of Florida until he retired, enjoyed a distinguished career as a biologist, anatomist, neurophysiologist, and fetal-placental physiologist. Flandreau, South Dakota
Flandreau is a city in and county seat of Moody County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 2,372 at the 2020 census. It was named in honor of Charles Eugene Flandrau, a judge in the territory and state of Minnesota. He is credited with saving the community of New Ulm, Minnesota, from destruction during conflict with the Sioux tribe in 1862. In 2015, the nearby federally recognized Flandreau Indian Reservation of Santee Sioux had planned to open the nation's first recreational marijuana lounge in a former bowling alley, close to its existing Royal River Casino and Hotel. Any tourists or non-tribal members using marijuana on tribal land risked state prosecution, so they abandoned the plan. Bryan Matthews
Sir Bryan Harold Cabot Matthews, (14 June 1906 – 23 July 1986) was Professor of Physiology, Cambridge University 1952–1973, emeritus professor thereafter and Life Fellow of King's College, Cambridge. The spinal cord is a long, thin, tubular structure made up of nervous tissue, which extends from the medulla oblongata in the brainstem to the lumbar region of the vertebral column (backbone). A slow-wave potential is a rhythmic electrophysiological event in the gastrointestinal tract. The normal conduction of slow waves is one of the key regulators of gastrointestinal motility. Slow waves are generated and propagated by a class of pacemaker cells called the interstitial cells of Cajal, which also act as intermediates between nerves and smooth muscle cells. Slow waves generated in interstitial cells of Cajal spread to the surrounding smooth muscle cells and control motility. Edgar Adrian
Edgar Douglas Adrian, 1st Baron Adrian (30 November 1889 – 4 August 1977) was an English electrophysiologist and recipient of the 1932 Nobel Prize for Physiology, won jointly with Sir Charles Sherrington for work on the function of neurons. He provided experimental evidence for the all-or-none law of nerves. Biography Adrian was born in Hampstead, London, the youngest son of Alfred Douglas Adrian, legal adviser to the Local Government Board, and Flora Lavinia Barton. He was educated at Westminster School and then studied Natural Sciences at Trinity College, Cambridge, graduating in 1911.
