Doetinchem (; Dutch Low Saxon, Low Saxon: ) is a city and Municipalities in the Netherlands, municipality in the east of the Netherlands. It is situated along the IJssel, Oude IJssel (Old IJssel) river in a part of the Provinces of the Netherlands, province of Gelderland called the Achterhoek. The municipality had a population of in and consists of an area of of which is water. This makes Doetinchem the largest town (by population) in the Achterhoek. On 1 January 2005, a municipal restructuring merged the neighbouring municipality of Wehl as well as the Zelhelmse Broek area with Doetinchem. City Centre (Doetinchem)
Doetinchem Centrum or Stadscentrum (city centre) is the central district of Doetinchem, the biggest city in the Gelderland, Gelderse Achterhoek. On the south side of the district is the Oude IJssel river, which can be crossed via three bridges; the Europabrug (Doetinchem), Europabrug, the Oude IJsselbrug and the Saap Roelofsbrug. The city centre consists of what was the historical city of Doetinchem until 1945, when it was bombed by the British Royal Air Force, who may have mistaken it for the city of Kleve, Germany. During this bombing, large parts of the district went up in dust, including most of the city wall and city gates. Street names in the district and the piece of wall remaining by the riverbank of the Oude IJssel commemorate these. The district has a variety of shops, catering for the regional market, as well as multiple restaurants, bars, cafés and a hotel. Cultural services can be found in the district as well. De Huet
De Huet is a suburban district near the city of Doetinchem, mostly built in the 1980s and 1990s. The district is located south-west of the city centre, and south of the Oude IJssel river. The residential district has a lot of greenery. Apart from that, the mall ''de Bongerd'' (roughly: ''the Orchard'') is located within the district. ''De Bongerd'' includes community centre ''De Zuwe'', a church ''De Wingerd'' (roughly: ''the Vineyard'') and a former sports hall. There are also a multitude of shops throughout the district. Oosseld
Oosseld or Oosselt, also known as De Bloemenbuurt is a district within, and former hamlet (buurtschap) of the municipality of Doetinchem, located in the Dutch province of Gelderland. Until 1919 Oosseld belonged to the municipality Ambt Doetinchem. '' Koekendaal'' and '' Ter Gun'' are also part of Ooseld. History At the first population census, following the introduction of the Burgerlijke Stand, Oosseld consisted of 79 houses and 580 citizens. In 1870 there were 741 citizens, and by 1890 the population had once again decreased, this time to 572. The Roman Catholic church of ''Ter Gun'' had services held by the pastor of '' Wijnbergen'', which nowadays is part of the municipality of Doetinchem, but was included in the municipality of Bergh at that time. IJzevoorde
IJzevoorde is a hamlet in the municipalities of Doetinchem and Bronckhorst in the province of Gelderland in the east part of the Netherlands. Overview It was first mentioned in 1235 as Ysenuort and means fordable place through the IJze. The postal authorities have placed it under Doetinchem. In 1840, it was home to 839 people. It includes a school, a kindergarten, a gym, a bar and a small stage. The school has about 60 students and there are a lot of farmers' children attending the school. Wehl
Wehl is a town in the eastern Netherlands, about 5 km west of Doetinchem. Wehl was a part of Prussia until 1808, when it was joined to the Netherlands. In those years it was officially a part of Zeddam. Wehl became an independent municipality in 1813, when it was given back to Prussia; in 1816, it returned to the Netherlands. It remained an independent municipality until the municipal reorganization on 1 January 2005, when Wehl became part of the larger neighbouring municipality of Doetinchem. Gaanderen is a village in the Dutch province of Gelderland. Achterhoek
The Achterhoek (; ) is a cultural region and COROP area in the Eastern Netherlands. Its name (meaning "rear-corner") is geographically appropriate because the area lies in the easternmost part of the province of Gelderland and therefore in the east of the Netherlands, protruding into Germany. The Achterhoek lies at the east of the IJssel. On the other sides, it borders Germany to the southeast and the province of Overijssel to the northeast. In 2015, the Achterhoek had a population of 389,682. Nieuw-Wehl
Nieuw-Wehl is a village in the eastern Netherlands, about 10 km west of Doetinchem. Before 1 January 2005, it was part of the municipality of Wehl, along with neighboring village Wehl. After the division, Nieuw-Wehl joined the municipality of Doetinchem. Nieuw-Wehl was first mentioned between 1830 and 1855 as "Achter Wehl", meaning behind Wehl. Overstegen
Overstegen is a district in the north-east of Doetinchem, the biggest city within the Gelderse Achterhoek. Typical for this district is the many apartment buildings found by the Caenstraat and around the mall. Apart from a mall, a care facility, Het Trommelslag, is found within.
