Ditisheim
The Ditisheims are a prominent dynasty of Swiss Jewish industrialists. Immigrating first to Hégenheim, France, then to La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland in 1858 to escape religious persecution, Jacques Ditisheim and his descendants were instrumental in the development of the Swiss watchmaking industry. The Ditisheims have links with other prominent industrialist families of Swiss watchmaking, including the Gallets, Eberhards, Vogels and Blums, forming a close inner circle which led the country's industry during the 19th and 20th centuries. Georges Eberhard (1865–1926) was a Swiss watchmaker and industrialist who founded Eberhard & Co. Biography Early life Georges-Lucien Eberhard was born in 1865 in Saint-Imier, the son of a prominent Bernese family tracing its origins back to the 10th century. The Eberhard family had been instrumental in the early development of the Swiss watchmaking industry. Georges's father initiated him to the art of watch making. Paul Bernard Vogel was a Swiss industrialist who owned the Solvil et Titus watch manufacture. Business life In 1930, Vogel acquired the ''Solvil et Titus'' and ''Paul Ditisheim'' brands from their founder Paul Ditisheim. Vogel moved the company's headquarters to Geneva where he became the chairman of the ''Salon Montres et Bijoux'' (the '' Watch and Jewelry's Fair''), the most prestigious association of Swiss watch manufacturers and jewelers of the time. By the 1950s Vogel, feeling the shift in consumer's habits, decided to divide its brands into two. For one brand, the company kept producing the luxury watches for which it was famous. A watchmaker is an artisan who makes and repairs watches. Since a majority of watches are now factory-made, most modern watchmakers only repair watches. However, originally they were master craftsmen who built watches, including all their parts, by hand.
