Die Skeptiker
Die Skeptiker ( English: The Skeptics) is a German punk band founded in 1986 in East Berlin. The band is one of the most significant punk bands in East Germany, and belongs to the group of punk bands known as die anderen Bands, along with Sandow, Die Art, Feeling B, Tausend Tonnen Obst, and Die Firma. Although they performed songs critical of the Wall, they were able to gain an official license to perform live shows (''Spielerlaubnis'') by the East German state by writing intelligent lyrics with criticism between the lines. They were also able to establish themselves in the broader German music scene after German reunification. East Berlin
East Berlin (; ) was the partially recognised capital city, capital of East Germany (GDR) from 1949 to 1990. Knorkator
Knorkator is a German band from Berlin that combines Heavy metal music, heavy metal with comical elements. They proclaim themselves to be "Germany's band in the world" (), as the title "The best band in the world" was already taken by Die Ärzte. The name is a personification of , a dated adjective used in Berlin and the Ruhr (river), Ruhr basin meaning "great" or "fabulous" (similar to the English slang word "swell"). The band was founded in 1994, but only played in the Berlin/Brandenburg area until 1998. Knorkator gained further fame (and some notoriety) in 2000 with their performance of (sic; literally, in Berlin dialect, "I'm turning into a pig") in the German national qualification for the Eurovision Song Contest. Skew Siskin
Skew Siskin are a German hard rock band based in Berlin. They formed in 1990 when guitarist Jim Voxx met up with singer Nina C. Alice. The band's original line up was completed by the addition of drummer Nik Terry and bass guitarist Jogi Rautenberg. The band's name translated into English means "Crazy Bird"; Nina C. Alice chose the name as due to spending time living in Britain knew that "bird" there is often colloquially used to refer to women. They signed up with Giant Records in 1992, under whose label they released their debut album, the self-titled '' Skew Siskin'', in 1992. The album showcased an aggressive hard-rock sound compared with both AC/DC and Motörhead, and received favourable reviews. The track "If the Walls Could Talk" became a minor hit on MTV. Extrabreit
Extrabreit is a German band established in Hagen, Germany in 1978. The band was one of the most successful exponents of the Neue Deutsche Welle movement of the 1980s. History The band was founded around the end of 1978, when they began their career as a German punk rock band; later they were ascribed to the Neue Deutsche Welle (NDW) movement, though their music is not typical of the NDW genre. It was influenced heavily by punk rock music, and their lyrics were often critical of politics and society. The members viewed themselves as punks, whose only association with the NDW was that they appeared at the same time. As testament to that, they wrote on their homepage: "Ja wir haben den Scheiß eben mitgemacht!" (Yeah, we went along with that shit). Jingo De Lunch
Jingo de Lunch is a German punk band from Kreuzberg, Berlin. They formed in 1987, releasing five albums before temporary disbanding in 1996. Biography Prehistory Most members had a solid musical background. Vocalist Yvonne Ducksworth (a Canadian who arrived in Germany in 1983) had previously sung in Combat Not Conform. Guitarist Sepp Ehrensberger had played in the Berlin cult punk rock band called Vorkriegsjugend (1984–85). Ehrensberger and Ducksworth played together in Manson Youth. Ehrensberger and Tom Schwoll (guitar) had played in Terstörte Jugend. Feeling B
Feeling B was a punk rock band founded in East Berlin in 1983. They started out firmly grounded in the underground punk scene. Over time, Feeling B's popularity grew greatly, and climaxed around the end of the German Democratic Republic. Frontman Aljoscha Rompe (1947–2000), a Swiss living in East Berlin, supplied the vocals to the band's songs. Rompe, guitarist Paul Landers, and keyboardist Christian "Flake" Lorenz were the only consistent members throughout the band's history. At various times, the band included bassist Christoph Zimmermann and drummers Alexander Kriening and Christoph "Doom" Schneider. Landers, Lorenz, and Schneider later found fame with Rammstein. First Arsch drummer and future Rammstein singer Till Lindemann participated once with Feeling B for the song "Lied von der unruhevollen Jugend", an interpretation of a Russian communist song, for which he is credited on the album '' Hea Hoa Hoa Hea Hea Hoa''. Mad Sin
Mad Sin is a German psychobilly group that began in 1987. Style Mad Sin, formed in 1987, have been inspired by horror punk and B-movies, with a theatrical style which they describe as not "...constrained by the psychobilly tag but veer[ing] into punk, country and metal influences too." Without abandoning the psycho-horror lyrical content, their musical arrangements have widened to incorporate other variables. The Cassandra Complex (band)
The Cassandra Complex are a British electronic rock group originally formed by Rodney Orpheus, Paul Dillon, and Andy Booth in 1980 in Leeds, England. The current line-up still features original members Orpheus, Dillon, and Booth, with the addition of part-time US musicians Chris Haskett and Mera Roberts. Helloween
Helloween is a German power metal band founded in 1984 in Hamburg by members of bands Iron Fist, Gentry, Second Hell and Powerfool. The band has at times been called one of the most influential European heavy metal bands of the 1980s. Its first lineup consisted of singer and guitarist Kai Hansen, bassist Markus Grosskopf, guitarist Michael Weikath and drummer Ingo Schwichtenberg. By the time Hansen left Helloween in 1989 to form Gamma Ray (band), Gamma Ray, the band had evolved into a five-piece, with Michael Kiske taking over as lead vocalist. Schwichtenberg and Kiske both parted ways with Helloween in 1993; Schwichtenberg died two years later as the result of suicide. Gamma Ray (Band)
Gamma Ray is a German power metal band from Hamburg, founded and fronted by Kai Hansen after his departure from power metal band Helloween, in 1989. He is the band's lead vocalist, guitarist and chief songwriter. Between 1990 and 2014, Gamma Ray recorded eleven studio albums. Roland Grapow
Roland Grapow (born 30 August 1959 in Hamburg) is a German guitarist and music producer. He is best known for his time in the power metal band Helloween, with which he played for twelve years, after replacing founding member Kai Hansen. He subsequently created the power metal band Masterplan in 2001, which is still active today. Life and career Early years Grapow started playing guitar at age 12. His father bought him a guitar and had him take lessons, but Grapow couldn't stand the theory part and his teacher told his father that the boy didn't have any talent for guitar playing. Helloween Prior to joining Helloween, Grapow was a member of the heavy metal band Rampage.
