Diao Yinan
Diao Yinan (; born 1969 in Xi'an, Shaanxi) is a Chinese director, screenwriter and occasional actor. He won the Golden Bear for Best Film at the 2014 Berlin International Film Festival for the widely acclaimed Chinese neo-noir film ''Black Coal, Thin Ice''. Diao is considered a member of the Sixth Generation (film movement), sixth generation of Chinese film makers whose subject matter is focused on realism and stories of urban crime. Biography A graduate of the Central Academy of Drama in 1992, Diao has worked as a screenwriter with directors Shi Runjiu (in ''All the Way (2001 film), All the Way'') and Zhang Yang (director), Zhang Yang (in ''Spicy Love Soup'' and ''Shower (film), Shower''). Neo-noir
Neo-noir is a film genre that adapts the visual style and themes of 1940s and 1950s American film noir for contemporary audiences, often with more graphic depictions of violence and sexuality. ''Night Train'' is writer-director Diao Yinan's second feature film. Like his previous film, ''Uniform (film), Uniform'', ''Night Train'' takes place in Diao's home province of Shaanxi and was shot in and around Baoji. ''Night Train'' premiered in the 2007 Cannes Film Festival as part of the Un Certain Regard competition and was one of only two Asian films (the other being Li Yang (director), Li Yang's ''Blind Mountain'') in competition for an award. Uniform (film)
''Uniform'' is the 2003 feature film debut of director Diao Yi'nan, who had previously worked as an established screenwriter for directors such as Zhang Yang and Shi Runjiu. The film, produced by Hu Tong Communications, was distributed via DVD in the United States by First Run Features as part of the Global Film Initiative. ''Uniform'' follows a young man, Wang Xiaojian, who, down on his luck, comes upon a seemingly abandoned policeman's uniform. Putting it on, Wang discovers he can have influence and control not only on others but himself as well. The film premiered at the 2003 Vancouver International Film Festival where it won the Dragons and Tigers award. ''Shower'' () is a 1999 Chinese comedy-drama film directed by Zhang Yang and starring Zhu Xu, Pu Cunxin and Jiang Wu. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on 14 September 1999 and won the FIPRESCI Prize. Though only the second directorial work by Zhang and the third production of Imar Film, ''Shower'' was selected for numerous film festivals, including San Sebastian Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, and Seattle International Film Festival, where it received many awards. ''Spicy Love Soup'' () is a 1997 Chinese film directed by Zhang Yang and written by Zhang, Liu Fendou, Cai Shangjun, and Diao Yi'nan based on a story by Zhang and Peter Loehr. ''Spicy Love Soup'' was produced by Loehr's Imar Film Company, Xi'an Film Studio, and Taiwanese financing. Zhang Yang (director)
Zhang Yang (; born 1967) is a Chinese film director, screenwriter, and occasional actor. He is the son of film director Zhang Huaxun. Zhang grew up in Beijing and studied until 1988 at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangdong, from which he graduated with a degree in Chinese literature. He then went to the Central Academy of Drama, graduating in 1992. Career Zhang Yang uses a realistic style and achieved great recognition for his 1999 independent production ''Shower (film), Xizao'' (; English translation: ''Shower''), which was successful at Chinese box offices and international film festivals. This was followed in 2001 by ''Zuotian'' ("Quitting" in its American release).
