Dhivehi Premier League
The Dhivehi Premier League, known as the MWSC Dhivehi Premier League for sponsorship reasons, is a Maldives, Maldivian men's professional association football, football league. At the top of the Football in Maldives, Maldives football league system, it is the country's primary football competition. Contested by 8 clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Second Division Football Tournament. Teams are playing 21 match each, totalling 168 matches in the season. The Dhivehi Premier League succeeded the Dhivehi League. Currently all eight teams are based at the National Football Stadium (Maldives), National Football Stadium. Cornelius Stewart (born 7 October 1989) is a Saint Vincentian professional footballer who plays as a forward for Liga 1 club Semen Padang and captains the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines national team. Club Valencia is a Republic of the Maldives, Maldivian professional football (soccer), football club based in Malé. Nicknamed ''The Sunrisers'', the club most recently competed in the Dhivehi Premier League, the top tier of Football in Maldives, Maldivian football. History The notion of establishing a football club named Club Valencia arose in the late 1970s from the players of blue and gold teams participating in the Junior Football Pool organized by National Sports Academy. The 2020–21 Dhivehi Premier League is the sixth season of the Premier League, the top Maldivian professional league for association football clubs since its establishment in 2015. Maziya are the defending champions, having won their third league title the previous season, their second in the Premier League era, having last won in 2016. The 2019–20 Dhivehi Premier League was the fifth season of the Dhivehi Premier League, the top-tier football league in the Maldives. The season started on 14 June 2019. TC Sports are the defending champions. Maziya secured the league title on 19 January 2020. Since New Radiant Sports Club and Victory Sports Club both teams are suspended, they are relegated to the Second Division Football Tournament. Teams A total of nine teams compete in the league. Ahmed Rizuvan (born 4 June 1995), known by his nickname Rizey, is a Maldivian professional footballer who is currently playing for Club Eagles. Rizuwan holds the record in October 2018, after scoring five hat-tricks in five consecutive matches of the Dhiraagu Dhivehi Premier League. Ali Ashfaq (; born 6 September 1985) is a Maldivian former professional association football, footballer who played as a Forward (association football), forward. Nicknamed "Man of Steel" (), he is regarded as one of the best players in the South Asian region. A prolific and individualistic goalscorer, he is a Free kick (association football), free-kick specialist and a clinical finisher. His trademark style of scoring is beating the defenders and rounding off the keeper to score. He is considered as the best Maldivian footballer ever, most notably when he was named as the "World's 2nd best top goal scorer" in 2013 by IFFHS, and the "Asian Football Confederation, AFC best goal-scorer of XXI century" after 2023, with 476 top-level goals.
