Dean Hsieh is an American artist, writer, and animator. Career Animation and film In 2005, Hsieh worked as an animator for the feature film ''A Scanner Darkly''. The film was directed by acclaimed director Richard Linklater based on influential sci-fi author Philip K. Dick's novel of the same name. Since its release, the film has gained a large cult following for its innovative use of rotoscope animation. He worked with the co-director of ''Machete'' in Austin on concept art for a proposed film based on Metallica's music. He also created concept art for a proposed film based on the cult hit novel Tokyo Suckerpunch. He has also written several screenplays, one of which was a finalist in an Amazon Studios film contest. A Scanner Darkly (film)
''A Scanner Darkly'' is a 2006 American Adult animation, adult animated science fiction thriller film written and directed by Richard Linklater; it is based on the A Scanner Darkly, 1977 novel by Philip K. Dick. The film tells the story of identity and deception in a near-future dystopia constantly under intrusive high-tech police surveillance in the midst of a drug addiction epidemic. The film was Digital cinematography, shot digitally and then animated using Rotoshop, interpolated rotoscope, an animation technique in which animators trace over the original footage frame by frame, for use in live-action and animated films, giving the finished result a distinctive animated look. Principal photography began on May 17, 2004, and lasted six weeks. The film features performances by Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey Jr., Woody Harrelson, and Winona Ryder. Golden Millennium was a glam rock revival supergroup formed in 1999 composed of Dean Hsieh, Travis Higdon, Tom Hudson, and Britt Daniel. Overview To commemorate the end of the 2nd millennium, Peek-A-Boo Records released the ''Golden Millennium EP'' on December 31, 1999. Huggy Bear were an English riot grrrl band, formed in 1991 and based in Brighton; active for three years, they played their final gig in December 1994. History Evolving in tandem with the Olympia, Washington-based riot grrrl movement led by feminist bands such as Bikini Kill, Huggy Bear called themselves "girl-boy revolutionaries", both in reference to their political philosophy and the gender makeup of their band.
