Wire (band)
Wire are a British rock band, formed in London in October 1976 by Colin Newman (vocals, guitar), Graham Lewis (bass, vocals), Bruce Gilbert (guitar), George Gill (lead guitar) and Robert Grey (musician), Robert Grey (aka Robert Gotobed; drums). They were originally associated with the punk rock scene, appearing on ''The Roxy London WC2'' album, and were instrumental to the development of post-punk, while their debut album, ''Pink Flag'', was influential for hardcore punk. Wire are considered a definitive and highly influential art punk and post-punk band, due to their richly detailed and atmospheric sound and obscure lyrical themes. Post-punk
Post-punk (originally called new musick) is a broad genre of music that emerged in late 1977 in the wake of punk rock. Post-punk musicians departed from punk's fundamental elements and raw simplicity, instead adopting a broader, more experimental approach that encompassed a variety of avant-garde sensibilities and non-rock influences. Inspired by punk's energy and do it yourself ethic but determined to break from rock cliches, artists experimented with styles like funk, electronic music, jazz, and dance music; the music production, production techniques of dub music, dub and disco; and ideas from art and politics, including critical theory, modernist art, Film, cinema and modernist literature, literature. These communities produced independent record labels, visual art, multimedia performances and fanzines. Pink Flag
''Pink Flag'' is the debut album by the British post-punk band Wire. It was released in November 1977 through Harvest Records. The album was critically acclaimed on release, and has since been highly influential; today it is regarded as a landmark in the development of post-punk music. Critical reception Reviewing in 1978 for ''The Village Voice'', Robert Christgau called ''Pink Flag'' a "punk suite", praised its "simultaneous rawness and detachment" and detected a rock-and-roll irony similar to, but "much grimmer and more frightening" than, the Ramones. In a 1978 ''Trouser Press'' review, Ira Robbins said that "Wire ushminimalism to new heights" and that the band "dredges up images of...beat poetry--short fragments of impressions set to music." ''A–Z'' is the debut studio album by Colin Newman, lead singer of post-punk band Wire. It was released in October 1980, through record label Beggars Banquet. "''A-Z'' was planned as the fourth Wire album, but EMI ire's labelcancelled studio time in the wake of failed negotiations with the band." Critical reception ''A–Z'' has been well received. Jim Derogatis and Wilson Neate, writing in ''Trouser Press'', called Newman's solo work "the most rewarding" of any Wire member's projects outside the main band. Trouser Press
''Trouser Press'' was a rock and roll magazine started in New York in 1974 as a mimeographed fanzine by editor/publisher Ira Robbins, fellow fan of the Who, Dave Schulps, and Karen Rose under the name "Trans-Oceanic Trouser Press" (a reference to a song by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band and an acronymic play on the British TV show ''Top of the Pops)''. Publication of the magazine ceased in 1984. The unexpired portion of mail subscriptions was completed by ''Rolling Stone'' sister publication ''Record'', which itself folded in 1985. ''Trouser Press'' has continued to exist in various formats. "Outdoor Miner" is a song written by Colin Newman and Graham Lewis, and performed by the English post-punk band Wire. It was released in January 1979 as the band's fourth single (reaching number 51 in the UK singles chart) and appeared on their second album, '' Chairs Missing''. Content The song originally appeared on their 1978 album '' Chairs Missing''. The song is based on Graham Lewis's fascination with the Serpentine leaf miner insect and details the life cycle of the insect. EMI recognised that the song could potentially be a hit single, but were concerned that it was too short, measuring only 1 minute 45 seconds. Unusually, the record label asked the group to make a longer version for the single. They added an additional verse and chorus plus a piano solo played by producer Mike Thorne, pushing the length to 2 minutes 51 seconds. Mike Thorne
Mike Thorne (born 25 January 1948) is an English record producer, arranger, composer, engineer, and musician. He started playing the piano at the age of 10. After studying physics at Hertford College, Oxford, in the late 1960s he worked as a tape operator in London with Deep Purple and many others. Later he worked as a music journalist, A&R man and in the late 1970s he became a record producer. As a record producer, Thorne has worked on albums by artists of various genres of rock, including punk, post-punk, jazz fusion and also pop. He has produced for artists including Roger Daltrey, John Cale, Bronski Beat, Soft Cell, Nina Hagen, Laurie Anderson and Soft Machine. His more notable productions include the seminal first three records by Wire: ''Pink Flag'', '' Chairs Missing'' and '' 154''; and Soft Cell's cover version of " Tainted Love" (which was a UK number 1 single for two weeks and sold 1.35m copies in the UK). Minimalism
In visual arts, music, and other media, minimalism is an art movement that began in the post-war era in western art. The movement is often interpreted as a reaction to abstract expressionism and modernism; it anticipated contemporary post-minimal art practices, which extend or reflect on minimalism's original objectives. ''154'' is the third studio album by the English post-punk band Wire, released in 1979 on EMI imprint Harvest Records in the UK and Europe and Warner Bros. Records in America. Branching out even further from the minimalist punk rock style of their earlier work, ''154'' is considered a progression of the sounds displayed on Wire's previous album '' Chairs Missing'', with the group experimenting with slower tempos, fuller song structures and a more prominent use of guitar effects, synthesizers and electronics. The album is so named because the band had played 154 gigs in their career at the time of the album's release. The single "Outdoor Miner" was a minor hit, peaking at number 51 in the UK singles chart.
