Derek Lawrence
Derek John Lawrence (16 November 1941 – 13 May 2020) was an English record producer, famous for his work for Joe Meek's Outlaws, Deep Purple, Flash, Machiavel, Wishbone Ash, and the Randy Rhoads era of Quiet Riot. Lawrence came in contact with Meek circa at the end of 1963, when he managed a group, Laurie Black and the Men of Mystery, that won a recording session at Joe Meek's studio. He continued working for him until 1965. He brought him Merseybeaters Freddie Starr and the Midnighters. In the late 1960s, he worked for Harold Shampan at Film Music (part of Top Rank) and as freelance producer (inspired by Meek) for The Pretty Things, The Zephyrs, The V.I.P.'s, The Nocturnes etc. He produced Jethro Tull's debut single " Sunshine Day" (1968). The London Borough of Barnet () is a suburban London boroughs, London borough in north London, England. ''Argus'' is the third album by the British rock band Wishbone Ash, released on 28 April 1972. It is their most commercially and critically successful album, peaking at No. 3 in the UK Albums Chart. Recording Although not intended as a concept album, the album is Greek mythology-themed to a degree, particularly on the second side. The album features a blend of progressive rock, folk, and hard rock, and is considered a landmark album in the progression of twin-lead guitar harmonisation, later adopted by bands such as Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. The sound engineer on ''Argus'' was Martin Birch, who also worked with Deep Purple, later with Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and other hard rock bands. ''Pilgrimage'' is the second studio album by the rock band Wishbone Ash. The album focuses more on folk and acoustic music as opposed to the blues rock sound that dominated the first album. The album also contains the instrumental jazz workout "Vas Dis" as well as moodier, slower instrumentals such as "Alone" and "Lullaby". The album sold well, reaching no. 14 in the UK Albums Chart, but the band reached their creative and commercial peak with their next studio release, '' Argus''. ''Wishbone Ash'' is the first studio album by Wishbone Ash. It peaked at number 29 in the UK Albums Chart in January 1971. Background The band opened for Deep Purple in early 1970. Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore was jamming during the band's soundcheck, when Wishbone guitarist Andy Powell joined in and began jamming with Blackmore. After the show, Blackmore recommended that MCA Records sign the band. Deep Purple producer Derek Lawrence produced this album, which features elements of blues, jazz, progressive rock, and psychedelic improvisation.. The first side contains three uptempo tracks along with the ballad "Errors Of My Way" which, unusually for a rock song, was written in 12/8 time. Yes are an English progressive rock band formed in London in 1968. PYE or Pye Records is an independent British record label. It was first established in 1955 and played a major role in shaping rock 'n' roll and pop music history. The Pye name was dropped in 1980 due to trademark issues, after which it produced almost no music until the company name and trademark was acquired by the Scottish broadcaster and music producer Tony Currie in September 2024. Ritchie Blackmore
Richard Hugh Blackmore (born 14 April 1945) is an English lead guitarist. He was a founding member and the guitarist of Deep Purple, one of the pioneering bands of hard rock. After leaving Deep Purple in 1975, Blackmore formed the band Rainbow (rock band), Rainbow, which fused hard rock with baroque music influences. Over time, Rainbow moved to catchy Pop music, pop-style mainstream rock. Rainbow broke up in 1984 with Blackmore re-joining Deep Purple until 1993. In 1997, he formed the traditional folk rock band Blackmore's Night along with his current wife Candice Night. Blackmore is prolific in creating guitar riffs and has been known for playing both classically influenced and blues-based solos. As a member of Deep Purple, Blackmore was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April 2016. Sunshine Day
"Sunshine Day" is a song recorded by British progressive rock group Jethro Tull. It was released as the A-side of the group's debut single, and was recorded on 6–7 January 1968 at CBS Studios in London. The single released on 16 February 1968 by MGM Records, in the UK only. The B-side, "Aeroplane", was recorded on 22 October 1967 at EMI Studios, London, under the artist name "John Evan Band". Both tracks were produced by Derek Lawrence, who is also credited with purposely designating the band as 'Jethro Toe'. Apparently, he did not like the name 'Jethro Tull'. "Sunshine Day" was written by Mick Abrahams, who joined the band in late 1967. The composers of "Aeroplane" were Ian Anderson and "Len Barnard", the latter a pseudonym for Tull bass player Glenn Cornick (born Glenn Douglas Barnard Cornick).
