Democratic Progressive Party (Singapore)
The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is a political party in Singapore. It was founded by former Workers' Party (WP) Assistant Secretary-General Seow Khee Leng in 1973. History and political development On 16 March 1973, Seow Khee Leng and other members of the WP broke away from the party and founded a new political party United Front (UF). On 5 March 1982, the party was renamed to Singapore United Front (SUF), to avoid confusion with the name of another party, United People's Front. During the campaigning in the 1984 general election, SUF chief Seow was sued by Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Kuan Yew and other members of People's Action Party for making defamatory remarks at two rally speeches that Lee and his cabinet were guilty of corruption. Seow was ordered to pay Lee and the PAP S$250,000 worth of damages and costs each. Mohamad Hamim Aliyas
Mohamad Hamim bin Aliyas (born 1962 or 1963) is a Singaporean businessman and politician. He is the secretary-general of the Democratic Progressive Party and the treasurer of the People's Alliance for Reform. Political career In the 2006 general election, Hamim contested Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC as part of a 6 member SDA team. The team lost to the PAP, receiving 31.30% against the PAP's 68.70%. In the 2011 general election, Hamim joined the SPP's star team in Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC led by Chiam See Tong. However, the team was defeated by the PAP team led by Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng. The SPP team received 43.07% of the vote against the PAP's 56.93%. After the election, Hamim left the SPP and joined the Democratic Progressive Party as the party's chairman. In the 2015 general election, Hamim left the DPP to join a SPP team to contest Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC once again. 1997 Singaporean General Election
General elections were held in Singapore on 2 January 1997. President Ong Teng Cheong dissolved parliament on 16 December 1996 on the advice of Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong. The results were released in the late evening that day and the ruling People's Action Party won a total of 81 out of 83 seats as well as a tenth consecutive term in office under the then-Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong. Other major political parties contesting in the election were the Workers' Party, Singapore Democratic Party, National Solidarity Party, Singapore People's Party and the Democratic Progressive Party. The Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) is a social liberal political party in Singapore. Singaporeans First (abbreviation: SingFirst) was a political party in Singapore founded on 25 May 2014 by Tan Jee Say. The party was dissolved on 25 June 2020. History and political development Formation and contests After SingFirst was founded in May 2014, Tan used a stylised adaptation of the simple heart logo, similar to the one he had used when he campaigned for the presidential election in 2011. 2015 Singaporean General Election
General elections were held in Singapore on Friday, 11 September 2015 to elect 89 members of Parliament. The outgoing Parliament had been dissolved and the general election called by President Tony Tan on 25 August, on the advice of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. The elections were for the 13th Parliament since independence in 1965, using the first-past-the-post electoral system. The elections marked several first since independence: the first election where all seats were contested, including Tanjong Pagar being contested for the first time ever since the ward's formation in 1991. The Bishan–Toa Payoh Group Representation Constituency (GRC) is a four-member Group Representation Constituency located in the central region of Singapore. The GRC consists the entire areas of Bishan, Singapore (excluding Bishan North), the majority of Toa Payoh, parts of Thomson, Singapore managed by Bishan-Toa Payoh Town Council. There are four divisions of the GRC: Bishan East-Sin Ming, Toa Payoh West-Thomson, Toa Payoh East and Toa Payoh Central. SPP was founded in 1994 by Sin Kek Tong who left the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) with various SDP members after internal conflicts in SDP. The leadership was held by Sin until Chiam See Tong left SDP in December 1996 and Chiam assumed leadership. Joo Chiat Single Member Constituency is a former single member constituency (SMC) that was located in the eastern region of Singapore. The SMC formerly encompassed the areas of Joo Chiat, Katong, Opera Estate, Siglap and a portion of Telok Kurau. It had existed from 1959 until 1988, when it was merged with neighbouring constituencies to form Bedok Group Representation Constituency (Bedok GRC). The MacPherson Single Member Constituency was a single member constituency (SMC) located in the central area of Singapore. At abolition, it was managed by Marine Parade Town Council. History MacPherson Constituency was created for the 1968 general election. In 1988, the constituency was renamed MacPherson Single Member Constituency with the creation of group representation constituencies (GRCs). MacPherson SMC would exist until 1991, when it was merged to Marine Parade GRC.
