Delancey Street Foundation
The Delancey Street Foundation, often simply referred to as Delancey Street, is a nonprofit organization based in San Francisco that provides residential Drug rehabilitation, rehabilitation services and Vocational education, vocational training programs for substance abusers and convicted criminals. It operates programs across the United States. Residents are reintegrated into mainstream society by running various businesses, including hospitality, transportation, and retail, that are wholly managed by the residents themselves. History Delancey Street Foundation was founded in 1971 in San Francisco by John Maher (Delancey Street), John Maher. John Maher (Delancey Street)
John Maher (1940 – December 3, 1988) was an American former child alcoholic and heroin addict, who founded the Delancey Street Foundation, a nonprofit organization, in 1971. The organization, based in San Francisco, provides residential rehabilitation services and vocational training for substance abusers and convicted criminals. As co-president of the organization from 1972 to 1984, Maher rose to national prominence as the subject of two books (''John Maher of Delancey Street'' by Grover Sales and ''Sane Asylum; Inside the Delancey Street Foundation'' by Charles Hampden-Turner), a TV movie (1975's ''Delancey Street: The Crisis Within''), and news media coverage (including a 1974 ''60 Minutes'' segment, "Love Thy Neighbor"). Delancey Street is one of the main thoroughfares of the Lower East Side in Manhattan, New York City. It runs from the street's western terminus at the Bowery to its eastern end at FDR Drive, connecting to the Williamsburg Bridge and Brooklyn at Clinton Street. It is an eight-lane, median-divided street, which is west of Avenue B (Manhattan), Clinton Street, and a service road for the Williamsburg Bridge east of Clinton Street. United Farm Workers
The United Farm Workers of America, or more commonly just United Farm Workers (UFW), is a labor union for farmworkers in the United States. It originated from the merger of two workers' rights organizations, the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA) led by César Chávez, Dolores Huerta, and Gilbert Padilla and the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee (AWOC) led by organizer Larry Itliong. They allied and transformed from workers' rights organizations into a union as a result of a series of strikes in 1965, when the Filipino-American and Mexican-American farmworkers of the AWOC in Delano, California, initiated a grape strike, and the NFWA went on strike in support. As a result of the commonality in goals and methods, the NFWA and the AWOC formed the United Farm Workers Organizing Committee on August 22, 1966. Cesar Chavez
Cesario Estrada Chavez (; ; March 31, 1927 – April 23, 1993) was an American labor leader and civil rights activist. Along with Dolores Huerta and lesser known Gilbert Padilla, he co-founded the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA), which later merged with the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee (AWOC) to become the United Farm Workers (UFW) labor union. Ideologically, his worldview combined left-wing politics with Catholic social teachings.
