Deke Gard
Frank Jacob "Deke" Gard (March 27, 1892 – September 27, 1918) was an American rugby union player who played flanker for the United States men's national team in its first two capped matches in 1912 and 1913. Early life and university years Gard was born on March 27, 1892, in Tremont City, Ohio, the eldest child of Emerson Earl Gard and Laura E. Gard (born Shanley). Gard moved with his family from Ohio to Glendora, California, in 1905 and attended Citrus Union High School, from which he graduated in 1910. Gard attended Stanford University from 1910 until 1914 and graduated in May 1914 with a degree in chemistry. While at Stanford, Gard played for the rugby team, serving as the team's captain during the 1914 season. During his senior season, Gard was described as "one of hebest forwards on the estcoast." Tremont City is a village in Clark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 352 at the 2020 census. The village is part of the Springfield, Ohio Metropolitan Statistical Area. The 1912 Australia rugby union tour of Canada and the United States was a collection of friendly rugby union games undertaken by the Australia national rugby union team against various invitational teams from Canada and the U.S, and also against the US national team. The squad's leadership Dr. Otto Martin Bohrsmann (1869–1944) was tour manager. He was a Sydney physician who served as New South Wales Rugby Union treasurer for a number of years. Howell attributes the team's poor performance to a lack of discipline stemming from weakly imposed tour management. Bohrsmann's name would later be given to the landmark Mona Road, Darling Point, Sydney property Otto, which he bought in 1925 and which was retained by his descendants until 2010. Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery
The Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery (french: Cimetière Américain (Meuse-Argonne), links=no) is a World War I cemetery in France. It is located east of the village of Romagne-sous-Montfaucon in Meuse. The cemetery contains the largest number of American military dead in Europe (14,246), most of whom lost their lives during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive and were buried there. The cemetery consists of eight sections behind a large central reflection pool. Beyond the grave sections is a chapel which is decorated with stained glass windows depicting American units' insignias. Along the walls of the chapel area are the tablets of the missing which include the names of those soldiers who fought in the region and in northern Russia, but have no known grave. It also includes the Meuse-Argonne American Memorial. This cemetery is maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission.
