Death (metal Band)
Death was an American death metal band formed in Altamonte Springs, Florida, in 1983 by guitarist Chuck Schuldiner (who later became the band's sole vocalist), drummer/vocalist Kam Lee and guitarist Rick Rozz. Formed out of what would become the Florida death metal scene, Death is considered to be a pioneering band in death metal. The band's 1987 debut album, '' Scream Bloody Gore'', has been widely regarded as one of the first death metal records, alongside the first records from Possessed and Necrophagia. Death had a revolving lineup, with Schuldiner, aside from a European tour, being the sole consistent member. The group's style also progressed, from the raw sound on its first two albums to a more complex one in its later stage. The band disbanded after Schuldiner died of glioma and pneumonia in December 2001, but remains an enduring influence on heavy metal. Terry Butler
Terry Butler is an American bassist who currently performs with the death metal bands Obituary (band), Obituary and Inhuman Condition. He was also a member of Six Feet Under (band), Six Feet Under, Massacre (metal band), Massacre and Death (metal band), Death. He is married with three children, and is brother-in-law of former Six Feet Under bandmate Greg Gall. On May 7, 2019, Butler's then 27-year-old daughter, Jona Wright, died in a single-vehicle car accident after her car came off the road and was overturned multiple times, also leaving Butler's two grandsons, ages 6 and 10 at the time, who were also in the vehicle, with minor injuries. Richard Christy
Thomas Richard Christy Jr. (born April 1, 1974) is an American drummer and radio personality, best known for being the former drummer for several heavy metal bands since the early 1990s, most notably Death, and his tenure on ''The Howard Stern Show''. Born and raised in Kansas, Christy took an interest in rock and heavy metal music in his youth, and started playing the drums at age ten. He played in several bands while at school. Christy's music career began in 1992 when he joined the Springfield, Missouri group Public Assassin, and also worked as an electrician. In 1996, Christy formed Burning Inside and relocated to Orlando, Florida, where he joined and toured with several popular heavy metal bands until 2004, including Acheron, Death, Control Denied, Iced Earth, and Leash Law. A glioma is a type of primary tumor that starts in the glial cells of the brain or spinal cord. They are malignant but some are extremely slow to develop. ''Outburn'' is a print magazine and online publication focusing on alternative rock, heavy metal, punk rock, indie rock, and other genres. It presents news on bands, music releases, and events, in-depth interviews, high-quality studio and live photography, and music reviews. From March 2018 to March 2021, the print magazine was on hiatus. In April 2021, Outburn resumed publication of the print magazine, beginning with issue #93. Necrophagia ( ) was an American death metal band formed in Wellsville, Ohio in 1983. The band is credited as one of the inaugural groups within the death metal genre, along with Possessed and Death. History Early years (1983–1997) Necrophagia was formed by Frank "Killjoy" Pucci in 1983. The band name is derived from the act of cannibalizing, or eating a corpse. The word is a combination of the Greek words ' (corpse), and ' (to eat). Necrophagia was a popular group in the underground extreme metal "tape trading" scene. Their first full-length album, '' Season of the Dead'', was recorded and released in 1987. The band split up sometime after the album's release. Possessed is an American death metal band, originally formed in 1982 in the San Francisco Bay Area. Noted for their fast style of playing and Jeff Becerra's death growl, growled vocals, they are often called the first band in the death metal genre, and paved the way for the 1980s Bay Area thrash metal scene, along with Metallica, Exodus (band), Exodus, Testament (band), Testament and Death Angel. The band is also notable for featuring future Primus (band), Primus member Larry LaLonde, who was the guitarist for Possessed from 1984 to 1987. ''Scream Bloody Gore'' is the debut studio album by American death metal band Death, released on May 25, 1987, by Combat Records. It is considered by many to be "the first true death metal record". Chuck Schuldiner, the band’s co-founder and leader, performed guitar, bass and vocals, and composed all tracks on the album. John Hand is noted in the album's credits as playing rhythm guitar, though this was incorrect and Hand was only in the band for a short period and never performed or recorded on the album. This is also the only Death album to feature drummer Chris Reifert, who had joined for the ''Mutilation'' demo, and the only one of the band's albums to not be recorded at Morrisound Recording. Florida Death Metal
Florida death metal is a regional scene and stylistic subdivision of death metal. Some of the most significantly pioneering and best-selling death metal acts emerged in Florida, especially in the Tampa Bay area. As a result, Tampa is unofficially known by many death metal fans as the "capital of death metal." Rick Rozz (born Frederick D. DeLillo, January 9, 1967) is an American guitarist. He grew up in Brooklyn, New York and spent his formative years in Altamonte Springs, Florida, attending Lake Brantley High School. He is best known for his work with the death metal bands Death and Massacre. He still resides in Florida. He played on and co-wrote the well-known death-metal releases ''Leprosy'' in 1988, '' From Beyond'' in 1990, the EP ''Inhuman Condition'' in 1991 and the more rock-oriented LP ''Promise'' in 1996. He also wrote the music for the 2014 Massacre release ''Back From Beyond'' on Century Media Records.
