Emma De La Barra
Emma de la Barra, known by the pseudonym César Duáyen, (1861-1947) was an Argentine writer, best known for her novels ''Stella'' (1905) and ''Mecha Iturbe'' (1906) which were praised for their portrayal of modern women. She is closely associated with the Costumbrismo movement. ''Stella'' became the first best-seller in the country, and in 1943 it was adapted into a film starring Zully Moreno as the character of Stella. Other notable works include ''El Manantial'' (1908), ''Eleonora'' (1933) and ''La dicha de Malena'' (1943). Francisco León de la Barra y Quijano (16 June 1863 – 23 September 1939) was a Mexican political figure and diplomat who served as the 36th President of Mexico from May 25 to November 6, 1911 during the Mexican Revolution, following the resignations of President Porfirio Díaz and Vice President Ramón Corral. He previously served as Secretary of Foreign Affairs for one month during the Díaz administration and again from 1913 to 1914 under President Victoriano Huerta. He was known to conservatives as "The White President" or the "Pure President". Early career León de la Barra's paternal grandfather, Juan Francisco León de la Barra, was an Argentine-born fighter in the Chilean War of Independence under Bernardo O'Higgins. Maipina De La Barra
Maipina Copacabana de la Barra () was a Chilean writer of travel books and advocate of women's education. After her husband's early death, she travelled across parts of Europe and South America with her daughter Eva. Having settled permanently in Buenos Aires, she published a memoir of her travels entitled ''Mis impresiones y mis vicisitudes'' (1878). The book discussed the state of women's education in the societies she had visited and was the first travel journal to be published by a Chilean woman. Life and travels Maipina de la Barra was born in April 1834 in Paris as the daughter of the Chilean politician José Miguel de la Barra and his French wife Athénaïs Pereira de Lira. Her unusual given name was chosen in remembrance of the Battle of Maipú (1818), a confrontation between the newly independent government of Chile and the Spanish Empire in which her father had fought.
