David Nuuhiwa
David Kealohalani Nuuhiwa III (more commonly known as David Nuuhiwa; born 1948) is an American Hawaiian surfer. Life Nuuhiwa was born in 1948 in Honolulu, Hawaii, Territory of Hawaii. He is the son of a Waikiki beachboy and martial arts instructor, and began surfing at age five, one year after his mother died. He moved to Southern California in 1961, with his father David Nuuhiwa II. David Nuuhiwa is widely known for his soulful noseriding. Often perched at the tip of his board for 20 seconds or more. Nuuhiwa's smooth and fluid style established him winning the May 10th 1966 international championship in San Diego. Nuuhiwa continued to win contests following the shortboard era, such as the 1971 U.S. Surfing Championships. Noseriding
Noseriding is the act of riding the front end of a surfboard. It is one of the most accomplished maneuvers in surfing. Some advanced maneuvers include: hang ten toes, hang five toes, stretch-five, front foot/heel hang, and back foot/heel hang. Noseriding is a functional maneuvers best performed on waves around head high or less in size. Noseriding is performed mainly on noserider-style surfboards, which are generally or more in length, with larger surface area and higher water displacement to provide a more stable walking surface. Background American surfer and writer Matt Warshaw wrote, "Noseriding wasn't identified as a maneuvers unto itself until the early 1950s, after the surfboard fin had grown big enough to really anchor the tail." ''Five Summer Stories'' is a 1972 surf film by Jim Freeman and Greg MacGillivray of MacGillivray Freeman Films. The last film of the genre by the duo, it explores the joy of surfing amid the backdrop of 1970s political and environmental problems. Its stars include David Nuuhiwa, Eddie Aikau, Gerry Lopez, and Sam Hawk. The film's backstory dates two years prior, when MacGillivray and Freeman decided they will end their surf filmmaking career, and conceived ''Five Summer Stories'' as their closure for the surfing community. The film was cinematographed by Bud Browne, with principal photography occurring for months in Hawaii. Editing included the creation of animation by John Lamb, who was among the first to animate surfing and skateboarding. ''Rainbow Bridge'' is a 1971 film directed by Chuck Wein centering on the late 1960s counterculture on the Hawaiian island of Maui. Filmed in summer 1970 with non-professional actors and without a script, it features largely improvised scenes with a variety of characters. To bolster the film, executive producer Michael Jeffery brought in his client Jimi Hendrix to film an outdoor concert. Hendrix's heavily edited (no complete songs) performance appears near the end of the film. ''Rainbow Bridge'' was a critical failure and has been re-released on video tape and DVD formats. Although it only contains 17 minutes of Hendrix performing, it continues to attract attention as his second-to-last American concert and the last one filmed.
