Darren McCormack (hurler)
Darren McCormack (born 29 July 1978) is an Irish hurler who played as a centre-back for the Westmeath senior team. Born in Castlepollard, County Westmeath, McCormack first arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he first linked up with the Westmeath minor teams as a dual player before later joining the under-21 hurling side. He made his senior debut during the 1997 league. McCormack subsequently became a regular member of the starting fifteen and won three Christy Ring Cup medals. As a member of the Leinster inter-provincial team on a number of occasions, McCormack won one Railway Cup medal. At club level he is a four-time championship medallist with Castlepollard. McCormack announced his retirement from inter-county hurling on 24 May 2012. Castlepollard ( or ''Cionn Toirc'') is a village in north County Westmeath, Republic of Ireland. It lies west of Lough Lene and northeast of Lough Derravaragh and Mullingar. Name The name ''Castlepollard'' comes from the name of a castle or fortified manor built by the English army captain Nicholas Pollard in the early 17th century. The village's official Irish name is ''Baile na gCros'' (anglicised ''Ballinagross''), meaning "town of the cross (or crossroads". However, the name ''Cionn Toirc'' (anglicised ''Kinturk''), meaning "head of the boar", has also been applied to the village. The townland of Kinturk Demesne covers the southern part of the village. Leinster Inter-provincial Hurlers
Leinster ( ; ga, Laighin or ) is one of the provinces of Ireland, situated in the southeast and east of Ireland. The province comprises the ancient Kingdoms of Meath, Leinster and Osraige. Following the 12th-century Norman invasion of Ireland, the historic "fifths" of Leinster and Meath gradually merged, mainly due to the impact of the Pale, which straddled both, thereby forming the present-day province of Leinster. Dual player or dual star is a term used in Hiberno-English to describe someone who competes in multiple sports — for example, in Victorian Ireland, cricket and hurling. The term today in Gaelic games typically describes a male player who plays both Gaelic football and hurling or, if a female player, a player of ladies' Gaelic football and camogie. The player does not necessarily have to play at the same standard in both sports. The Carlow County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) ( ga, Cumann Luthchleas Gael Coiste Ceatharlach) or Carlow GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland, and is responsible for Gaelic games in County Carlow and the Carlow county teams. Edward Coady
Edward "Eddie" Coady (born 1978) is an Irish hurler who plays as a left corner-forward for the Carlow senior team. Coady made his first appearance for the team during the 1999 National League and has become a regular member of the starting fifteen since then. During that time he has won two Christy Ring Cup medals, one National League (Division 2A) medal and three Kehoe Cup medals. At club level Coady is an All-Ireland and Leinster medalist at intermediate level with Mount Leinster Rangers. He has also won four county senior championship medals. A captain of a Gaelic games team, sometimes known as a ''skipper'', is a player who, during the course of a match as well as before and after it, has several additional roles and responsibilities over and above those of his teammates. Tradition means that some teams rotate the captaincy annually, though others may adopt a permanent captain. As well as being an onfield leader, a captain takes the coin toss and raises the trophy when this is the game's prize. Responsibilities The captain leads the team out onto the pitch. Before the start of a match, a coin toss between captains of the opposing teams is used to determine which end of the ground each team will kick to.
